“When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life.” —John Lennon

Book Reading: JUST BE YOU BABY!
GOD AND YOU AGAINST ALL ODDS
Thursday, April 14

Approximate Duration: 60 minutes
About the Book
Being true to yourself is perhaps the greatest reflection of love and acceptance that a person can have. Allowing yourself to be the person you were created to be is also an acceptance that you were made by a loving God and that He has a specific purpose for your life. This book, Just be You Baby, was written to encourage and inspire those who are same-gender loving and who are struggling to fit in to what society, the church and their families expect, to learn to be honest with themselves, seek God for their specific purpose, and live a truthful life that helps to build His kingdom. God created you before you became a living soul; before you were born into sin; before your spirit entered flesh. You are a vital and integral part of His plan and it is important that you know and accept this fact, break the labels of identity and be who you were created to be. If you identify as LGBTQ or same-gender loving, then Just be You Baby will show you how to first love God, then love yourself, so you can then love others.

Movie Night:
I STAND CORRECTED
(10-Year Anniversary Screening)
Thursday, April 28
5:00 PM (PT), 7:00 PM (CT), 8:00 PM (ET)
Approximate Duration: 90 minutes
There will be a Q&A with the film's subject, Jennifer Leitham, and the filmmaker, Andrea Meyerson, immediately following the film screening.

Watch Jennifer Leitham perform and it’s instantly obvious the tall striking redhead is an original. This world-famous jazz bassist plays her instrument left-handed (something virtually unheard of in the profession) and when she takes center stage – standing to play rather than sitting – her entire body seems to dance with the bass as her mane of long, fiery hair whips and bobs to the blistering pace set by her fingers. She is a special talent made all the more unique because Jennifer Leitham began her life and career when she was known as John Leitham.

I STAND CORRECTED, a compelling documentary from filmmaker Andrea Meyerson, charts Leitham’s extraordinary rise to the top as a virtuoso of the upright bass and reveals how she risked it all when she publicly transitioned to her true self at the height of her career. An intimate and compassionate study of Leitham’s life, the film explores the self-doubts and fears she wrestled with as she rose through the ranks of an often homophobic jazz world, and celebrates the joy she discovered after embracing her female identity.

Weaving together “before and after” stills and footage, I STAND CORRECTED incorporates candid interviews with Leitham and several other jazz luminaries such as “Tonight Show” band leader Doc Severinsen and drummer Ed Shaughnessy, along with a broad variety of entertainers and friends of Leitham’s including Roy McCurdy, Denny Tedesco, Sweet Baby J’ai, Gary Chen, talent agent Dale Sheets and jazz entrepreneur Todd Barkin among others.

Winner of 14 Awards!

Book Reading: DON'T YOU DARE
Sunday, May 1
3:00 PM (PT), 5:00 PM (CT), 6:00 PM (ET)
Approximate Duration: 60 minutes
There will be a Q&A with the author immediately following the reading.

About the Book
What would you do if you discovered a century-old secret? For Gayla Turner, a hidden wedding photo led to a seven-year journey to find out more about her grandmother and the woman standing next to her dressed as the groom. Don’t You Dare (available May 24, 2022) weaves together the author’s own current-day journey of discovery and an incredible true-life love story that took place over a century ago.

The story starts when Gayla discovers hidden
wedding photos, dated June 8, 1915, and learns her grandmother had a secret.

While researching her grandmother’s past, a love story emerged between her and the mystery woman in the photos. Gayla uncovers a secret lesbian social club that was formed in the early 1900s by a local businesswoman in the little Wisconsin farm town. Women from as far away as Chicago traveled to attend her exclusive parties. The local townspeople assumed the parties were for single young ladies to talk about how to find a husband. Little did they know, finding a man was not a subject of their conversations.

Her grandmother left just enough information that only someone who understood her secret life would be able to uncover the hidden story she left behind. That person turned out to be her granddaughter, Gayla.

Written to educate, entertain, and inspire members of the LGBTQ+ community, Don’t You Dare sheds light not only on our history but the future before us.

DON’T YOU DARE IS AVAILABLE FOR PREORDER EVERYWHERE BOOKS ARE SOLD.

About the Author
By day, Gayla Turner is a bank examiner, utilizing her intuition and curiosity to uncover facts and analyze complex figures. A debut author, she has honed her writing skills with private instructors, editors, and critique groups of established writers in the Los Angeles area. She is a member of the Wisconsin Historical Society, Romance Writers of America, and the Historical Novel Society. In her free time, Gayla enjoys cooking, hiking, looking at old photos, and researching LGBTQ+ history. Born and raised in Southern California, she and her partner live in San Marino, California, and share their home with their adorable dog, Bailey.

A documentary by Kathryn L. Beranich and Andrea Meyerson

Community has always been the driving force behind Andrea Meyerson’s work. And that did not change when COVID-19 locked us down, Andrea devised a plan to keep lesbians connected and entertained.

On March 21, 2020, she launched Women On The Net and went live five nights a week, two to three shows per night, via Zoom. Women all over the world came together for events that included comedians, films, musicians, panel discussions, parties, and more. These nightly gatherings helped alleviate the loneliness and feelings of isolation by bringing joy, laughter, and new friends into these women’s lives.

Andrea called it distant socializing, the participants called it a silver lining.

As the world has started to open up, AN UNEXPECTED COMMUNITY, a documentary about Women On The Net has gone into production to preserve this piece of lesbian herstory and celebrate the beauty of our community. We would be most grateful if you would consider supporting the making of this film.

All contributions made through the Center for Independent Documentary (CID), our fiscal sponsor, are tax-deductible. No donation is too small!
