On April 20,1999, I was at a gas station in Littleton, Colorado filling my car. While pumping the gas I noticed two teenage boys leaving the gas station on foot. They stood out to me because they were very loud, joking, jesting, and wearing long black trench coats on a beautiful spring day. They crossed the street and walked across the grass towards Columbine High School.
Later I discovered I had seen Harris and Klebold as they embarked on their mission to murder innocent people at the school. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Columbine School Shooting and reminds me of the immense tragedy of loss of innocent human life.
A father of one of the victims shared his thoughts about why something so horrific could happen in the 2007 May-June edition of CL Magazine. Anita Crane wrote an article and quoted Brian Rohrbough from the CBS evening news free speech segment. He said,
"When my son Dan was murdered on the sidewalk at Columbine high school on April 20, 1999, I hoped that would be the last school shooting. Since that day, I’ve tried to answer the questions, 'Why did this happen?' This country is in a moral free fall. For over two generations the public school system has taught in a moral vacuum, expelling God from the school and from the government, replacing Him with evolution, where the strong kill the weak, without moral consequences and life has no inherent value.
We teach there are no absolutes, no right or wrong. And I assure you the murder of innocent children is always wrong, including by abortion. Abortion has diminished the value of children.”
Are his observations true? When I read the news I see an increase in cases of children who are abused, victims of sex trafficking, experiencing acute mental health issues, traumatized by exposure to violence such as school shootings, victimized by social media, exploited and bullied.
This is why the life of the preborn matters. Because the protection or demise of innocent children has cultural consequences. It communicates a clear message-are children valuable?
Is it too late to change the trajectory of valuing our children?
