Chuckwalla or Gila Monster?
Chuckwallas are frequently confused with gila monsters on Grand Canyon rafting adventures, as young chuckwallas tend to have similar coloring to gila monsters.
Chuckwallas are flat, heavy-bodied lizards, with thin blunt tails. They can grow up to 18 inches long, and vary in color significantly from juvenile to adult males and females.
Because their diet is mainly leaves and bud flowers, you're most likely to spot them near plant growth. You'll also see them in rock crevices, where they'll puff themselves up in the rocks to protect themselves from predators.
