Hello Aztec Familia!
Monday, February 7th is instructional day #100 and we are 56% done with the school year! As the year rolls on and uncertainty nears, let's keep the faith that we will be ok no matter how things turn out. I am inspired when I walk into offices to see the hard work from our classified staff and also inspired when I walk into classes to see the professionalism of our staff while working with our Aztec Scholars. Our Aztec Scholars deserve the best as they have many important exams right around the corner (CAST, SBAC, AP, IB, ELPAC, Final Exams). Thank you classified and certificated staff for all that you do while keeping the faith, staying focused, and believing in our Aztec Scholars!
Here are some examples of how our Scholars and our school keep the faith on a daily basis!
2) FantAZTEC scholar athletes: wrapped up basketball, soccer, and wrestling seasons and kept the faith by winning league in JV girls basketball and advancing to CIF in wrestling!
3) FantAZTEC Azusa community: families keep the faith by continuing to send us their children to better prepare them for a brighter future!
4) FantAZTEC Azusa staff: our Aztec staff keep the faith by ensuring our scholars are college and career ready no matter what! A big Shout Out to our counselors over National Counselors Week! Thank you Mrs. Hoke, Ms. Sanchez and Mrs. Mejia for all that you do to support our Aztec scholars. Personal and academic counseling is a very important part of high school life. Thank you for your tireless efforts meeting with students and families to make sure our scholars get into the most rigorous classes and are prepared to make college and career choices. We thank you for the letters of recommendation, transcript reviews, many conversations to motivate and encourage our scholars and detentions to redirect scholars when needed. Your early morning and late nights have made us Aztec strong. We are proud of our Aztec Counseling team!
February includes: Black History Month, Freedom from Slavery Day, Ground Hog Day, Rosa Parks Day, World Cancer Day, Abraham Lincoln's B-day, Valentine's Day, Super Bowl, World Day of Social Justice, President's Day, George Washington's B-day, School Counseling Week, and Heart Month.
Aztec Scholars are more engaged when staff is prepared with engaging curriculum and also connect the students culture, personal experiences, and how the student's ancestors helped to shape this nation and the world.

Aztec Hard Truths...
-EASE (Info) - Our friends at EASE shared with us their January newsletter - EASE - January Newsletter. This month’s newsletter highlights the importance of self-reflection as we start a new year and the newsletter provides links to articles on managing your mental health during a crisis. Please share this newsletter with your staff.
-If you feel that you need to call the Child Protective Services Hotline after you speak to a student, CPS can be reached at 1-800-540-4000 if any student shares information that must be reported.
-Please continue to let us know if you see any students with tagging or if you hear any comments about a possible fight. We want to be as proactive and safe as possible!
-Last week our percent of students present in class ranged from 89%, or 1 out of 10 students were absent. This is compared to our regular attendance rate of above 92%. Our attendance rate has increased, however, it is still lower than our regular average.
-All Staff: As many of you know, Lydia Sanchez has not returned to work since our winter break due to illness. While she has returned to the hospital, her husband asked that we keep Lydia in our thoughts and prayers. There are get well cards in the main office mail room if you would like to sign them. Let’s keep her spirit up!

Aztec Staff will ensure that our Aztec Scholars will be better prepared for their future by creating daily lesson plans that:
-engage students from bell to bell in a safe and welcoming environment;
-support all students and build a positive class community;
-keep students focused with culturally relevant topics and technology;
-infuse planned essential questions that promote collaboration-creativity-critical thinking-communication;
-implement regular checking for understanding;
-and promote student use of academic language and ACES writing.
Further, in order to continue to improve based on the WASC recommendations, teachers and staff members will work professionally with their peers to improve the learning, instruction, and lesson plans based on common assessment data and be collaborative with all Azusa stakeholders.
Let's continue to be safe.
Sincerely,
Martin O. Gomez, PhD
