From the Klein Collection: Astrolabe

Roughly translating to “star-taker” in Greek, an astrolabe is an instrument used for astronomy, astrology, and navigation. The tool was invented sometime in the height of the Roman empire and remained a popular apparatus until the 18th century, when the sextant replaced it as an easier-to-use navigating tool. This piece was made in the 19th century, so it’s more likely that it was a sort of hobby object than a serious navigational tool.
