Tea Stain Rose! Such fun to be had with non-toxic acrylic paints and patinas!
You won't want to miss this week's video. I was so inspired by Tara Wilson's beautiful necklace (of LuluMax, shared with you guys a few weeks back) that I got totally into patina mode and started whipping up a few Shabby Chic style recipes of my own!
 | Shabby Chic Tea Stain Rose Patina with Paints Over Brass; Tea Stain Rose Spoon Earrings |
I made these darling little earrings in the video, too....
They are all made from this sweet little brass spoon finding:
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/item/Brass-Spoon-Heart-Design-Drilled-Raw-Brass-250-x-50-Inches-12812
If you want to try it, I will tell you that I have more on order and there are still over 50 pieces in stock, but they are selling FAST.
Another piece that you could adapt (it's not drilled and doesn't have the heart, but sheesh, it WORKS for earrings so don't let that stop you!)
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/item/Spoon-Stampings-Souvenir-Spoons-Raw-Brass-375-x-75-Inches-12813
Some of the items I used in the video are the large hibiscus flower: http://www.bsueboutiques.com/item/Brass-Flower-Hibiscus-Flower-Brass-Stamping-Raw-Brass-Unplated-Drilled-59mm-6462
and the raw brass tea rose:
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/item/Brass-Roses-Raw-Brass-Tea-Rose-32mm-4046
Look what I did to our Victorian Winged stamping:
OOOH that came out so nice. It was a piece I'd prepped for the video with dark ivory spray paint.
Find it in raw brass here on the website:
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/item/Brass-Stamping-Victorian-Winged-Style-Raw-Brass-US-Made-63-x-88mm-3917
And how about this cuff bracelet blank? It's the one from the video, too:
Find that cuff flat here:
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/item/Bracelet-Blank-Cut-Out-Tapered--Design-Raw-Brass-5-Inches-11687
(By the way: there is a video posted on this listing that will help you to turn it so it can become a cuff. ALSO: next week's video I will again demonstrate how I use my fingers and a hard worktable to turn this very piece into a lovely cuff! So why not come over and grab some so you'll be ready to work with me?)
SO ANYWAY.....Don't these colors just cheer you up? I have had ENOUGH of winter, already!
Here is a blog post with more details on how I changed up the color on these pieces:
http://bsueboutiques.typepad.com/bsue_boutiques_jewelry_su/2014/02/paint-patina-ink-tea-stain-rose-patina-and-what-it-can-become.html
ALSO IN THE BLOG POST:
News about our FEBRUARY CHALLENGE at the B'sue Boutiques Creative Group at Facebook can be found in this blog post entered just today:
Paint, Patina, Ink: Tea Stain Rose Patina and What It Can Become
You'll find the 'specs' for the challenge in the post, as well as more information on how I changed those pieces up and what we'll be doing in the video next week.
I hope you like the progress we're making with videos. My goal is to do some clear teaching---at no charge--and to give you new ideas as well as simple techniques to use along with the products we offer at the B'sue Boutiques Website
I hope to get a lot of pieces colorized in different ways and get them ready to work with----it's good to have a 'painting day' and prep a bunch of stuff. That way you'll be able to complete a whole body of work in a certain color. This Tea Stain Rose color is just ONE idea.....once you get to playing around with your arsenal of patinas, patinas and inks, the sky is the limit!
Doubtless you'll come up with something uniquely your own!
Projects I have in play....not quite finished yet:
This one is a bracelet made from a sideways-bent Victorian luggage tag.
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/item/Brass-Stamping-Raw-Brass-Luggage-Tag-US-Made-70-x-51mm-11160
I did torch patina over the raw brass stamping....then added patina Gilder's paste and then distressed and sealed. I drilled it in the middle and then drilled out a 30x22 lace edged bezel as a cup, riveted together and then used the cup for my collage of ceramic roses, pearls and little vintage Tiffany-set crystals. Flatback crystals would have worked just as nicely:
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/flatback-rhinestones.shtml
And here is another bracelet in the works....used a raw brass filigree (SKU: fil06237) which I spray painted dark ivory, then distressed and added layers of color:
The cameo is colored with Raisin alcohol ink, and then heavily distressed and buffed out with a nubby sponge. I then set it in a 40x30mm backless bezel and pushed down the side of the bezel to finish it properly, just as a vintage bezel would be set. I then added it to this raw brass mount:
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/item/Brass-Mount-Brass-Pendant-Raw-Brass-40x30mm--10925
I torch patina'd it first, then when cool, I distressed it and sealed it, then mounted it to the filigree....then set the cameo, which was in the backless bezel...into the mount. It really looks nicely finished!
That pop of color really makes all the difference!
We restocked all of our cameos this week:
http://www.bsueboutiques.com/cameos.shtml
Here's that video that Kate and I made about adding color to cameos...in case you missed it! I doubt I will ever use another cameo just straight out of the drawer again. Adding color is SO SIMPLE and makes a TON of difference!

GINGERBREAD PATINA:
This is a WHOLE different animal!
Who knew such gorgeous, rich patina could be made in your OVEN.... with non-toxic things you have in your kitchen, already!
You need vinegar (I like dark cider vinegar but some say it doesn't really matter!)
and sea salt (some just use table salt)
Here is a blog post all about it, complete with VIDEO LINKS as I made a number of videos on this method several years ago:
Gingerbread, Gingerbrass: The Old Stuff and How You Can Replicate It
This method is fun and safe! The biggest trick to it is being SURE you have your brass completely and thoroughly degreased before you attempt to darken it.
To be sure, you really must degrease all brass before you try to colorize or patina it. I just wash it in a hot water bath with mild dishwashing soap. I then do a rinse in vinegar, then in water, and thoroughly dry.
Here are a couple more pix of pieces I enjoyed making some time ago:
and another:
Read up on it and then give it a try!
