Dear Members and Friends of the BABC,

I hope you are enjoying the summer and taking some moments to relax with family and friends. While August is typically a slower time, the BABC is busy preparing a robust events program to close out 2022. Tickets and tables for the legendary BABC Christmas Luncheon will go on sale soon, and you’ll start to see announcements for our other fall and winter events. In the meantime, we have some upcoming social networking events including the Young Professionals Mixer co-organized with the French American Chamber of Commerce and German American Business Association at Werqwise in San Mateo on August 18th. For our rugby fans, BABC member AEG Rugby is hosting the annual HSBC LA Rugby Sevens at the end of the month in Los Angeles. The US leg of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series has grown to become one of the most popular stops on the global circuit. You can check out all of our upcoming events on this page.

In early September, the British American Business Network brings back its annual Transatlantic Conference in Cleveland, Ohio. This event convenes members of all 22 chapters of the British American Business Network for a 3-day program of high-level business discussions and networking with executives actively involved in transatlantic business. You can learn more about the agenda, tracks and speakers here. For anyone interested in speaking or sponsoring the event, I am informed there are a few opportunities still available. If interested, please contact Chris Carey.

I’d like to draw your attention to a recent article from BritishAmerican Business highlighting the importance of greater transatlantic cooperation: Tackling The Skills Shortage: Recommendations to Help Develop the Talent that our Economies Need." The recommendations call on the US and UK governments to develop and expand inclusive education plans and skills training to close the digital divide, increase minority and gender representation in training programs and the workforce, introduce economic incentives for private sector-led digital skills training, enhance US-UK bilateral cooperation to tackle skills gaps in domestic markets, and address barriers to transatlantic labor mobility.

Finally, all of us at the BABC extend a huge thank you to all of our renewing members (see below).

Be well and enjoy the rest of summer.

With gratitude,
Maya Mancuso

Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco
Dear BABC Members,

July and August often mark a lull in activity as offices empty out for summer holidays and teams relax, recharge, and prepare for the hustle and bustle of the final months of the year. While the work of diplomacy is a 24/7 endeavour, many members of the Consulate team have found time to step away and enjoy well-deserved holidays. In recent weeks we have also bid farewell to members of our team whose tours have ended, and we have welcomed (or will be welcoming) new team members to take their place. If you regularly interact with the Consulate, you may see some new faces in familiar roles, and I encourage you to give them a hearty welcome to Northern California.

This month we are pleased to welcome the Provost of Imperial College London, Professor Ian Walmsley FRS, to the Bay Area. During his visit, Professor Walmsley will be engaging in meetings with key stakeholders in support of ICL’s core academic mission of education, research and translation. We are also delighted to be hosting a reception for ICL alumni at the Consulate with Professor Walmsley. Imperial College London is one of the finest universities in the world and is a leader in the development of the next generation of researchers, scientists, and academics. ICL represents the very best of UK science and innovation and its work to tackle global challenges through multidisciplinary collaboration is respected around the world. We are thrilled to celebrate their talent and contributions.

Finally, by this time next month we will know the results of the Conservative Party leadership election and therefore our next Prime Minister. An announcement is expected on 5 September. I would like to reiterate that the work of the Government and our work delivering for the UK internationally continues and we are preparing for a busy autumn schedule of ministerial and parliamentary visits. If we can be of assistance or support, please do not hesitate to contact us.

We look forward to our ongoing partnership.

Joe White MBE
Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco

SQUIRE PATTON BOGGS AND BABC WEBINAR
With the implementation of new regulations involving the handling of “HR data” across the US and EU, transatlantic employers can expect to face unique challenges as they make efforts to incorporate these new regulations with existing procedures. In the coming months, managing data subject rights and business obligations that apply to HR data will be of the utmost importance for those involved in managing employees, hiring new talent, maintaining legal compliance, and/or overseeing a company’s overall operations.

The BABC has joined forces with the legal experts at Squire Patton Boggs to provide insights through a one-stop-shop webinar on the pitfalls of hiring globally and the privacy/compliance matters related thereto.

The panelists will address the following:

  • How the UK and EU GDPR and data protection authorities and works councils impact US organizations, including inter-company and cross-border access and transfers;
  • January 1, 2023 implementation of the full HR data requirements under the California Consumer Privacy Act, including data subject access rights;
  • Steps employers can take to safeguard HR data, manage data subject requests and prepare for enforcement actions;
  • Overview of US and UK employment verification and right to work compliance and interplay with employee data protection.

WEBINAR: BUYER'S REMORSE – ENFORCING YOUR RIGHTS WHEN ACQUISITIONS GO WRONG
Despite best intentions, some business acquisitions do not turn out as planned. The situation within a business may not always be as it was presented, and unanticipated issues may arise after the deal is done.

Drawing on our practical experience of helping buyers navigate post-acquisition issues, this webinar considers what to do to mitigate the financial consequences of a poorly performing acquisition, including:

  • Making, preserving and pursuing warranty or indemnity claims
  • Clawbacks and deferred consideration
  • Dealing with material non-disclosures
  • Quantifying and mitigating losses
  • Other routes to recovery

This session will be of interest to institutional investors, frequent acquirers and sellers, and others involved in M&A activity.

Tackling The Skills Shortage: Recommendations to Help Develop the Talent that our Economies Need

BAB has published its latest paper “Tackling the Skills Shortage: Recommendations to help develop the talent our economies need.” Even as employment rates in the US and UK remain high, many companies are experiencing unfilled vacancies and a shortage of skilled workers. Responding to this challenge, the paper outlines both domestic policy solutions and new bilateral initiatives that can help ease the skills gap in the current labor market.

The paper calls on the US and UK governments to develop and expand education plans and skills training, increase minority and gender representation in training programs and the workforce, introduce economic incentives for skills training, and enhance US-UK bilateral cooperation to develop the skills both economies need.

Commenting on the release of the paper, BAB CEO Duncan Edwards said: “We’ve heard time and time again from businesses about the need to address the skills and education gap in the US and UK labor markets..."
