Maya Mancuso
President, BABC
Northern California

US Business Relationships Manager
Dear Members and Friends of the BABC,

It gives me great pleasure to be greeting you all for the first time as BABC Northern California’s new President having been elected to the role at the 66th Annual BABC Annual General Meeting. First and foremost, I would like to thank Stephen Wares for his exceptional leadership as President over the past three years. With the pandemic dominating the majority of his tenure in the role, it is safe to say that his presidency and stewardship was a pivotal moment in the organization’s 68 year existence. Huge congratulations are in order for Steve for his tremendous role in navigating the BABC through its most difficult time in history. Steve now takes over from Edward Grenville as Chairman. I would like to thank Ed for his leadership as Chairman over the past two years. Ed will continue to serve on the Executive Committee as Secretary and Chair of the Nominating Committee. Thank you to all our Board members and a warm welcome to all those who were recently appointed.

Our entire Board and our Executive, Finance, Christmas lunch and other committees devote a great deal of time and energy to ensuring the organization thrives and supports Jo Healey, our brilliant Executive Director. I know that she is truly grateful, and I thank everyone involved as I commence my journey of leading the BABC.

Now we begin the work of strengthening our organization and taking it to the next level. With the support of our members, for which we are so grateful, the BABC has weathered a changing business environment and we are focused on ensuring delivery of our mission to create meaningful and tangible business relationships that promote trade and investment in the transatlantic corridor.

To achieve this goal, we need your help! We recognize that the ways we do business and interact has changed over the course of the past two and a half years and we would like to hear from you, our members, on how the BABC can evolve to stay relevant to your business networking and development needs. Members will shortly be receiving a brief and carefully developed survey to help us gather your input. I strongly encourage all members to participate and help shape the future of your BABC Northern California. At the end of the summer, there will be a random prize drawing among all survey participants to win a bottle of Penfold’s spectacular 2018 RWT Bin 798 Shiraz.

Thank you to all those recently renewing their memberships with the BABC (see below). Our events program remains light during the summer with a few social and business networking events upcoming in July and August. In September, we restart our educational events programming and of course, in December we shall host the 59th Annual BABC Christmas Lunch. Tickets and tables will go on sale soon.

That just leaves me to wish you all a relaxing and enjoyable summer. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me or Jo with ideas for your BABC.

With gratitude,
Maya Mancuso

Joe White, MBE
Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco
Dear BABC Members,

As we enter the month of July, I would like to reflect fondly on the Consulate’s celebration of Pride throughout June. As part of the festivities, we were honoured to host a trade mission of LGBTQ-led British tech businesses. The delegation was accompanied by Minister Mike Freer, the (now former, see below) Minister for Exports and Minister for Equalities. His visit focused on engagement with key contacts in the technology sector including venture capitalists, global accelerators, and tech founders. He met with individuals who offered critical insights into how UK companies can better seek to access the knowledge and capital in Silicon Valley, as well as the diversity and inclusion specialists in tech companies that are working to bring equality to the tech sector. We also hosted the delegates and the Minister at a Pride reception at the Residence with LGBTQ+ business leaders and policymakers in attendance.

Minister Freer’s engagement with local elected leaders during his time in San Francisco helped to raise the UK’s profile locally as a diverse and inclusive country, showcasing the work of Her Majesty’s Government in ensuring LGBTQ+ communities in the UK prosper. The UK and California share a deep commitment to the core values of diversity and inclusion and there is much more for us to do to continue to demonstrate that commitment throughout the year.

Finally, you will no doubt have been closely following the political developments in the UK in recent weeks. Despite the ongoing leadership contest, we are not in a pre-election period. The work of the Government and our work delivering for the UK internationally continues. But with a slightly lighter calendar this month as a result, the Consulate team will be focused on well-deserved rest and recuperation and on building capacity in anticipation of a busy autumn.

Lewis & Llewellyn is pleased to announce that the firm has been named by The National Law Journal (“NLJ”) to its 2022 list of Elite Boutiques. The NLJ selected attorneys from less than 20 boutique firms across the United States “who have moved the needle in the legal industry.”

This award comes on the heels of Lewis & Llewellyn’s recognition by the NLJ earlier this year as one of the top Plaintiff’s firms in America. In selecting Lewis & Llewellyn, the NLJ acknowledged our firm’s effort over the past 10 years to consistently deliver the highest quality legal services. According to the NLJ, as “one of California’s premier litigation boutiques, Lewis & Llewellyn sets the precedent, delivering concierge-level client service and outstanding legal representation.”

BAB Welcomes the Start of the Fifth US-UK Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) Dialogue

BAB welcomes the start of the fifth US-UK Small and Medium-Sized Enterprise (SME) Dialogue, beginning June 22, 2022, in Boston, Massachusetts. As an organization that has long advocated for the interests of SMEs in the transatlantic corridor, we are encouraged by both governments’ strong commitment to SMEs and the continuing momentum behind transatlantic trade discussions.

BAB published its latest policy paper, “Taking the Next Step: A plan of action for US-UK trade cooperation following the US-UK Trade Dialogues,” in advance of the Dialogue to inform ongoing policy discussions. Building on the progress made in government and stakeholder meetings earlier this year, the paper outlines pragmatic recommendations to advance US-UK cooperation on issues affecting SMEs.

Commenting on the start of the Dialogue, BAB CEO Duncan Edwards said: "BAB has long advocated for the resumption of the US-UK SME Dialogues as a useful forum to advance cooperation on some of the most important issues affecting the transatlantic economic corridor..."
