LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Jo Healey

BABC Executive Director

Dear Members and Friends of the BABC,

We hope that the year thus far is treating you all well despite all the volatility in the markets. We were of course very sad to see the events of last Friday unfold for Silicon Valley Bank, who have been a long-time member and supporter of the BABC Northern California. All of us here at the BABC keep our friends at SBV in our thoughts.

The post-pandemic world is keeping the BABC busy as we seek to help our members and friends in the British American Business Community try to get back to normal with a range of events. It is great to see attendance picking up as evidenced by the 60+ guests who joined us at Cooley for our Annual Funding, Exits and IPO’s event on March 1st. It was a lively and interesting discussion, which may have gone in a different direction had the event been held this week, but nonetheless, our Venture Capital panelists delivered a hearty discussion, covering their views on the Venture Capital market.

First up for events going forward! Tonight is our BABC NeXtGen | Young Professionals Happy Hour at Wingtip — almost sold out! On April 5th, we have our partner event with the Australian American Chamber of Commerce — and back by popular demand – the Penfolds Wines MasterClass — generously hosted by Withers Worldwide on April 5th. This event is limited in capacity so if interested to experience the Penfolds story and enjoy their delicious wines, do not delay in signing up.

On April 26th, we have our annual event for British Expats which covers topics such as planning properly for any international tax liabilities you may have now or in the future. We will also delve in to actions you can take to protect or potentially re-direct any pension funds you have left behind in the UK. New to the event will be a discussion around estate planning if you have assets overseas and as usual, we will also cover changes to US immigration laws, both for individuals and for corporations.

May 3rd hails the in-person return of the Spring European Networking Evening to be held in the South Bay, at the offices of Cooley in Palo Alto. This event, pre-pandemic, attracted over 120 guests from 10+ European chambers of commerce and is always a wonderful evening of getting know members of other international chambers.

Members of the BABC, please save the date of May 31st for our Annual General Meeting. At this event, we will vote in the Board of Directors and review the activities of the BABC Northern California over the past year. Tickets will go on sale in April.

Annually, our chapter actively participates in the British American Business Network Annual Conference, this year hosted by our London Chapter – June 12 - 14. You can find out more and register at this link. The event brings together its members of all 23 chapters throughout the North America and the UK. The aim is to convene senior-level business executives and government representatives actively involved in trade, investment and business flows between North America and the UK. This conference offers a series of roundtables, plenary sessions and networking receptions for over 150 guests. The conference has been hosted previously by BABN chapters in Cleveland, OH; New York, NY; San Francisco, CA, Los Angeles, CA; Chicago, IL; London, UK; and Birmingham, UK.

Finally, we would like to acknowledge all of our members who recently renewed their membership with BABC Northern California and for all the new members who have joined over the past few months. This year, we mark the 69th Anniversary of the organization and it is our members who keep the organization strong. Thank you.

If you are not a member of the BABC but have been thinking about joining to expand your networks, please contact me. Until the end of our fiscal year (March 31st), we have some membership discount options. Must join/pay by March 31st to qualify.

Yours sincerely,

Jo Healey

BABC Executive Director

LETTER FROM THE BRITISH CONSUL GENERAL

Joe White, MBE
Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco

Dear BABC Members,

On the heels of the creation of the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology last month, we begin this month with the announcement of the Science and Technology Framework which sets out our approach to making the UK a science and technology superpower by 2030. The launch of this new Framework is extremely exciting news for us at the Consulate and for everyone who believes in the UK’s leadership in this field. The motivation behind our science and technology superpower agenda is simple: science and technology will be the major driver of prosperity, power and history-making events this century. The United Kingdom’s future success as a rich, strong, influential country, whose citizens enjoy prosperity and security, and fulfilled, healthy and sustainable lives, will correspondingly depend on our ability to build on our existing strengths in science, technology, finance and innovation.

The Science and Technology Framework is the strategic anchor that government policy will deliver against, and which the government will hold itself accountable to. I look forward to sharing more about the clear action plans for each stand of the framework as they begin to be rolled out by summer 2023.

February was a busy month for the team. It saw us cover over 800 miles across the Central Valley from Sacramento down to Tulare and ministerial and parliamentary visits in Oregon and Washington State. March has already seen us criss-crossing Northern California, hosting a large reception at the California State Capitol and tossing pasties for St. Piran’s Day in Grass Valley. I myself will be attending South by Southwest in Austin for the first time as Tech Envoy to the US.

Finally, March is International Women’s History Month and the 8th was International Women’s Day and it would be remiss of me not to reflect on the tremendous significance of these dates. They are opportunities to not only pay tribute to the contributions of women across all sectors of societies, but to acknowledge the systemic challenges and barriers which continue to exist in those same sectors and industries. It is a call to action for us all to contribute to building a more equitable world where access to opportunities are available to all. I hope you will join me in committing to redoubling our efforts and ensuring that the energy we commit to the celebration of women in March is carried throughout the year.

Best wishes to all of you for a fruitful and productive March. As ever, I am tremendously grateful for the tireless work of the BABC in supporting transatlantic business every single day, year in and year out.

This is an intimate opportunity to taste 7 iconic, 90+ point wines of Penfolds, including the world-famous Grange.

2018 Penfolds Grange:

7 x 100 Points scores including 100 points by Lisa Perrotti-Brown

Radiant deep red, the 2018 Grange has aromas of ripe blackberries/blackcurrant reduction, laced with spices – notably fennel and anise, then a sprinkle of dark chocolate and cocoa-powder. With a full intense palate that is mouthcoating – a confluence of tannin/acidity/oak/fruit – all joyously meshed together. Crafted utilizing fully-ripe, intensely-flavored and structured shiraz grapes, the result is a unique Australian style that is now recognized as one of the most consistent of the world’s great wines. The 2018 Grange is a Penfolds vintage that will be one of the true greats, and will only get better as it ages.

Accolades:

  • Penfolds 2018 Grange Awarded 7 x 100-point scores by global critics
  • Penfolds is the only Australian Winery to receive 100-point scores from Wine Spectator (US) and Wine Advocate (US) for the same vintage (2008 Grange), and Grange is one of only 12 wines in history to achieve this.
  • Awarded more 90-point scores than any new-world winery.
  • Wine & Spirits Magazine awarded Penfolds, Winery of the Year honors 30 times, more than any other winery in the world

Special pricing offered for wines purchased at the event. This is a unique opportunity to bring and impress your wine-collecting friends and clients!

The typical contractual relationship of a construction project is a three-legged stool: the owner, the designers and the contractors. While the architects and contractors bring their respective expertise to the project, the owner often does not have construction experience or resources to manage the project. Serving as the owner’s representative, Pound Management Inc. supports the owner and guides them through the process to make their project successful.
