Dear Friends of the BABC,
It is difficult to find the words to start this month’s newsletter sitting here in comfort while 6,000 miles away the people of Ukraine are suffering the horrors of war, the likes of which we never thought we would see again on the European continent. Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Ukraine, those who have lost loved ones, and those who are fleeing to surrounding nations. Let’s hope that this can be resolved quickly and without further loss of life and suffering.
Here in the Bay Area spring is in the air and with mask mandates behind us, it appears that Covid may almost be in the rearview mirror. And with that, we are gearing up for a variety of in-person events to bring us all back together. There’s lots going on – check out our events calendar - and registration details are below. One of my favorite BABC events of the year is “Funding, Exits and IPO’s” which my firm, CCW Business Solutions, is sponsoring along with HSBC and Invest Northern Ireland. The event will take place on March 30th, this time in San Francisco at Werqwise and we have a fantastic panel of speakers so I hope you will be able to join us for this first-panel event of the year.
Another upcoming flagship event is the Annual Economic Forecast Luncheon to take place at the City Club on April 27th. Please save the date. JOIN US: 2022 FUNDING, EXITS & IPO'S EVENT |
|
Despite the pandemic, 2021 was a record-setting year. Overall, almost 1,000 companies went public, raising more than $300 billion breaking the previous record by more than $100 billion.
50 of these IPOs were Technology Companies including Roblox, Coinbase, Rivian and Robinhood. But while technology stocks on NASDAQ gained 21.4% overall it hasn’t been good news for everyone with many of these companies having lost at least half their values from their highs. Metromile has dropped more than 80% from its peak, while Robinhood is off by about 75%.
As we look ahead to 2022 there are many technology companies getting ready to go public whether via a traditional IPO, a direct listing or the special-purpose acquisition company (SPAC) route. Some of the most anticipated potential IPOs to watch in 2022 include Reddit, Instacart, Impossible Foods and Stripe.
There is plenty to pay attention to in 2022. A booming labor market, surging inflation, the threat of rising interest rates and the potential conflict in Ukraine could be leading indicators of impending stock market doom. Should we be concerned about a downturn or excited about the prospect of the end of the pandemic? How will these impact the technology sector and the IPO market this year?
Join us for an evening of lively, engaging and fun discussions and hear more about how things might work out for the technology community in 2022 and get a chance to ask questions our panel of Venture Capitalists. We will see how accurate their 2021 forecasts were and will see if we can have them make some forecasts for 2022.

AER LINGUS TO RESTART ONLY DIRECT SERVICE FROM SFO TO EMERALD ISLE |
|
Aer Lingus is pleased to announce the return of its transatlantic service from San Francisco to Dublin, reconnecting the Silicon Valley with the Emerald Isle. The route will be back on the Aer Lingus schedule, operating from San Francisco four times per week and daily from March 26.
San Francisco is the latest transatlantic route from Aer Lingus to resume and is the only direct route connecting the Golden City to the Emerald Isle this year. West Coast customers can now plan that long-awaited trip to Ireland whether it’s to reunite with family and friends, an in-person business trip or a vacation to discover the stunning scenery and rich culture.
Connecting through Dublin Airport is a great option for those wishing to travel to UK or Europe. Fly with Aer Lingus to 8 airports across the UK as well as a number of European cities including favourites such as Amsterdam and Paris.
Aer Lingus operates 14 direct routes between North America and Ireland, including New York, Miami, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Orlando, Washington, Seattle, and Philadelphia. The airline will be the only carrier offering direct flights between West Coast USA and Ireland with the return of daily flights to Los Angeles on May 12 and Seattle returning 5 times per week on May 26 also. Flights from the USA to Shannon will start from March 10, with 14 flights a week to New York and Boston.

THE US IMPOSES NEW EXPORT CONTROLS ON RUSSIA AND REGIONS OF UKRAINE |

On February 25, 2022, the Department of Commerce Bureau of Industry and Security (“BIS”) unveiled extensive new export control regulations on Russia and Russian-aligned regions of Ukraine as part of the Biden Administration’s economic sanctions package in response to the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

BAB POLICY AND TRADE UPDATES |

UK Government's State-Led Approach to Transatlantic Trade
The UK Department for International Trade (DIT) has announced it will pursue trade cooperation with individual US states in tandem with its efforts to enhance UK-US trade at a federal level. The UK government has indicated it will seek Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs), mutual recognition of professional qualifications, and regulatory dialogue with states across the US in order to continue strengthening trade and investment between the two countries.
BAB welcomes the government’s ambition to strengthen ties at the state level and has been fortunate to work closely with Minister for Trade Policy Penny Mordaunt in preparation for this initiative. While sub-federal trade cooperation should not be seen as a replacement for a comprehensive UK-US free trade agreement, engaging with US states has the potential to strengthen local economic ties, while also building a coalition of support for future UK-US trade negotiations.
BAB CEO Duncan Edwards responded to the UK Government's state-led approach to trade cooperation, commending DIT's efforts to strengthen trade through state-level engagement and reiterating support for a comprehensive free trade agreement. Read the full statement here.

2022 Transatlantic Growth Tracker
BAB is currently looking for submissions to the annual Transatlantic Growth Tracker (TAG). The campaign highlights the strength of transatlantic trade and investment by tracking companies—from SMEs to MNCs—that have expanded or invested on either side of the Atlantic in the past year.

Section 232 Tariffs: US and Japan
US Trade Representative Katherine Tai and US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo announced a new 232 tariff agreement with Japan earlier this month. Under the terms of the agreement, Japanese steel products entering US markets will no longer be subject to the application of Section 232 tariffs.
Despite progress made between the US, EU and Japan to resolve Section 232 tariffs, a similar agreement has yet to be reached with the UK (although discussions between the two governments are ongoing). BAB and many of our members have actively engaged with this issue over the past several years and we urge both the US and UK government to prioritize a timely and constructive resolution to ongoing trade disputes.
