LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Maya Mancuso

President, BABC

Northern California

US Business Relationships Manager

Dear Members and Friends of the BABC,

Fall has officially arrived and the Bay Area is buzzing with events and activities! It’s wonderful to see the city become more lively and here at the BABC, we're working hard to gather our members and create fresh network building opportunities. Here's a quick re-cap of recent events.

On October 3rd, the BABC NeXtGen | Emerging Leaders Group held the first in a series of leadership workshops generously hosted by Grant Thornton. Leading the workshop was Fiona Roberts, founder of consultancy firm BiaMindset. BiaMindset supports organizations to develop their talent. This first event in the series focused on Resilience and presented some extremely helpful strategies needed to sustain high performance in a forever changing environment. Learn more about the event here and to inquire about BiaMindset’s services, please contact our Executive Director who can put you in touch with Fiona.

I heard from Jo that the 11th Annual International Golf Scramble was an outstanding success. We welcomed close to 70 Golfers to the sunny Crystal Springs Golf Course – it was a scorcher – our thanks to all the international chambers of commerce who partnered with us to promote the event to their memberships and congrats to the winners. Learn more and see the photos here (link to Golf Previous events page).

Calling all HR professionals in companies operating on both sides of the pond - coming up next week is a webinar presented by Squire Patton Boggs on Global Workforce Compliance and navigating changes in US I-9 and UK Right to Work Rules. Register here

We've seen sustainability and corporate ESG plans shift from what many viewed as "nice to have" to a business imperative, and have a fantastic panel of speakers addressing this on October 25th at our event on sustainability presented by Patron member Bank of America: Sustainability Means Responsible Business Growth Presented by Bank of America - Oct 25, 2023 - We hope you can join us - BABC (chambermaster.com)

BritishAmericanBusiness have just released their BAB Policy and Trade Update for October and there is useful intel including an update on the UK-US Data Bridge: Click here to read.

As always, I’d like to thank our new members and those renewing for your involvement and support of the BABC Northern California. Be sure to utilize the organization to augment your networking and business development efforts this fall, and be sure you don't miss out on the Christmas lunch!

With gratitude,

Maya Mancuso

LETTER FROM THE BRITISH CONSUL GENERAL

Tammy Sandhu MBE

HM British Consul- General

San Francisco

Dear Members of the BABC,

I’ve had the pleasure of serving as Deputy Consul General for the past two years, and now it’s a great honour to take the mantle as His Majesty’s Consul General. My time so far in San Francisco has been incredibly rewarding: it’s taken me to many corners of this region, from the top of a skyscraper in Seattle; to the Oregon State Fair in Salem; to the World Agriculture Expo in the San Joaquin Valley of California; and everywhere in between.

With Joe fully expanding the role of His Majesty’s Tech Envoy across the United States, we’re looking to strengthen US-UK partnerships across all sectors. This transition underscores the UK’s increased focus on the front lines of technology and innovation, the breadth and depth of the existing partnership between the UK and the US, and the enormous potential to do more together both here on the West Coast and around the country.

The autumn period is always extremely busy, and this year is no exception. We’re heading into October with several delegations, high-level ministerial visits, and showcase events, with a particular focus on technology as the UK AI Safety Summit draws near on 1-2 November.

October and November are also big moments for our flagship Marshall Scholarship program. Interviewing the brilliant and inspirational US students who apply to attend graduate school in the UK – and continue the legacy of academic excellence, ambassadorial strength, and leadership connecting the US and the UK since the 1950s – is one of the highlights of my year.

This week we’re hosting in Sacramento our annual conference of political officers from across our US network. As part of that, we’re hosting a roundtable discussion with key agencies in California to discuss how we can more effectively collaborate on climate targets and energy security. I’m also looking forward to the climate conference, VERGE23, taking place later in October, where we’re bringing a UK founders’ mission to the Bay Area to pitch to potential investors. We’ve also got a delegation from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing, and Communities (DLUHC) travelling to cities along the West Coast to share UK best practice on urban regeneration.

Both Joe and I look forward to continuing our work with the BABC to support businesses and organisations across California and the Pacific Northwest. Together we can achieve our important and ambitious goals to achieve net zero, establish sensible guardrails around AI while promoting trade and innovation, and look after all the British nationals that choose to work, visit and live in this part of the world.

All the best,

Tammy Sandhu MBE

HM British Consul-General San Francisco

NONPROFITS & AI IMPORTANT — LEGAL CONSIDERATIONS AMID ONGOING DEVELOPMENTS

Many nonprofit leaders are seeking ways to harness the new tools brought about by generative artificial intelligence (AI) functionality. Before leaping into the brave new world of generative AI, however, careful consideration should be given to the potential legal, contractual, and regulatory complications that business uses of AI can present. Can professionals ensure accuracy when using AI tools? What should a nonprofit do (or not do) to maintain control over its valuable data and content? How should staff and volunteers be instructed to manage privacy risks?

Join Venable's complimentary webinar on Wednesday, November 8, 2023, from 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM ET to hear panelists address these concerns and other best practices for nonprofits to thoughtfully embrace this evolving technology.

According to London & Partners, London Heathrow has reclaimed its title as the world’s most connected airport according to aviation database OAG, having risen 21 places in the ranking, with New York’s JFK coming in second place. The news comes after Heathrow fell to 22nd place in last year’s ranking, with Chicago’s O’Hare airport taking the number one spot in terms of international arrivals, departures and total number of worldwide destinations in 2022.
