VP Business Development,

Dear Friends of the BABC,
As we move past Labor Day and into the Fall season, we would like to give you an update about what has been happening in August.
On August 13th, we once again held our monthly Young Professionals Happy Hour which was hosted by Werqwise. We would like to extend special thanks to Penfolds, who generously sponsored
and provided
the wine
for
the evening
which
was so
good
there wasn't much left at the end! With a record turnout, the opportunities for networking at this light social affair have never been greater
and we look forward to building on this over the next 12 months.
On Wednesday August 14th, we were delighted to welcome new and returning members to the Summer European Mixer featuring a sublime view
(of the Bay Bridge?)
at DocuSign. We'd like to thank the other European chambers both the FACCSF and GABA for providing a wonderful experience for our guests. Thank
you to everyone
who attended and we
are excited to develop these friendships post-Brexit Day in October
...
Looking ahead, we have been hard at work preparing for some big events coming up in September. On September 10th, there is the
aforementioned
Young Professionals Happy Hour co-hosted with Play Rugby USA. The following Monday (16th) there is a rare opportunity to taste the renowned Icon
Collection
wines of Penfolds at their Master Class Wine Tasting. The last weekend of the month we have a new event to the BABC calendar, Whisky Tasting ahead of 'Scotchtober' so we hope to see a strong turnout from our YP community.
Make sure to keep an eye out on our events calendar which is filling up quickly!
It is also not too soon to note that
the
56th BABC Annual Christmas Lunch
has officially launched
s
o don't hesitate to purchase your tickets and tables
quickly. Last year we were s
old out by the first week of October.
Finally, I am also delighted to note that our
BABC community continues to grow and develop as evidenced by our new and renewing members. I hope you will join me in welcoming the newest members of our
vibrant
and dynamic community - you will find information about them below. Please take a moment to visit their websites and contact Jo Healey if you would like to learn more.
Wishing everyone a great start to September and the Fall season.
Best,
Stephen Wares,
BABC President

Dear friends and members of the BABC,
I hope you all had a very good break over the summer. I do not know about all of you, but I have certainly used the term 'prorogation' more times in the last week, than in my previous 20 years in the Foreign Service.
Though there is a lot happening in Westminster, this month I'd like to talk about the continued investment in important sectors across the UK. Earlier in August, for example, the Government announced a $303 million investment in artificial intelligence to improve the health and lives of patients.
The investment will help establish a new National Artificial Intelligence Lab to bring together academics, specialists and technology companies to work on challenges in health and care, including earlier cancer detection, new dementia treatments and more personalised care. The Lab will sit within the UK's National Health Service.
The AI Lab's work could:
- use predictive models to better estimate future needs of beds, drugs, devices or surgeries
- identify patients most at risk of diseases such as heart disease or dementia, allowing for earlier diagnosis and cheaper, more focused, personalised prevention
- build systems to detect people at risk of post-operative complications, infections or requiring follow-up from clinicians, improving patient safety and reducing readmission rates
As we look to the future, it is increasingly important to invest in this technology and in systems that make everyone's lives better. As the Prime Minister has said about this investment: "...the NHS has the funding it needs to make a real difference to the lives of staff and patients. Transforming care through artificial intelligence is a perfect illustration of that."
Separately (and not quite AI), as I mentioned last month the Red Arrows will be visiting the Bay Area on 1 October. I want to invite everyone to view their flypast of the Golden Gate Bridge at roughly 11:15a, I suggest making your way down to Crissy Field for the best viewing spots.
Andrew Whittaker,
HM Consul General
