Dear Members and Friends of the BABC,
I am back online and in the office after the most rewarding maternity leave with my wonderful son Luca. These were the most adventure-packed, fun, challenging, and meaningful months of my life, and I am so grateful for this important time spent together.
| |
I'm glad to return to Bird & Bird and the BABC with a renewed sense of purpose, energy and a new outlook as a parent, and am excited to reconnect with you all in the BABC community. I’ve been delighted to see that the BABC remains as vibrant as ever offering excellent event programs, transatlantic updates and many opportunities to keep our members in the spotlight.
I’d like to extend my congratulations to our Executive Director, Jo Healey, for launching the beloved Christmas Luncheon early being now 60% sold out – that’s 600 guests already registered! A true testament to the occasion, which this year celebrates it 60th anniversary. I look forward to celebrating with all our members and their guests on Friday, December 15th at the iconic Fairmont Hotel.
In addition to the highly anticipated Christmas Luncheon, we have a number of exciting upcoming events which are highlighted below. I look forward to seeing many of you and having the opportunity to catch up.

With gratitude,

LETTER FROM THE BRITISH CONSUL GENERAL
Joe White, MBE
Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco
| |
Dear BABC Members,
There’s a definite buzz in the air. With the changing of the seasons and the back-to-school/work seasons in full flow, you can feel the hum of activity picking up from the summer. Here at the Consulate, we are looking forward to a busy few months of activity with senior ministerial visits, delegations, and major international summits.
All roads lead to the global AI Safety Summit on the 1st and 2nd of November at Bletchley Park in the UK. The AI Safety Summit will bring together key countries, as well as leading technology organisations, academia and civil society to inform rapid national and international action at the frontier of Artificial Intelligence development. The summit will draw on a range of perspectives both prior to and at the event itself to inform these discussions. The UK looks forward to working closely with global partners on these issues to make frontier AI safe, and to ensure nations and citizens globally can realise its benefits, now and in the future. The summit will focus on risks created or significantly exacerbated by the most powerful AI systems, particularly those associated with the potentially dangerous capabilities of these systems. Accelerating AI investment, deployment and capabilities represent enormous opportunities for productivity and public good. The emergence of models with increasingly general capabilities, and step changes in accessibility and application, have created the prospect of up to $7 trillion in growth over the next 10 years and significantly faster drug discovery. However, without appropriate guardrails, this technology also poses significant risks in ways that do not respect national boundaries. The need to address these risks, including at an international level, is increasingly urgent.
Matt Clifford, the Prime Minister’s Representative for the AI Summit, spent several days in the region at the beginning of this month meeting with leading AI companies, labs, and other key stakeholders. Individual countries, international organisations, businesses, academia and civil society are already taking forward critical work and driving international collaboration on AI. It is our hope that this summit will drive solutions to how to operationalise risk-mitigation measures at frontier AI organisations, assess of most important areas for international collaboration to support safe frontier AI, and provide a roadmap for longer-term action.
This month, we are also delighted to be hosting the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt for a crucial visit to Silicon Valley to engage with senior business leaders and investors. We are also welcoming Minister Nusrat Ghani of the Department for Business and Trade. Minister Ghani is leading a major aerospace delegation to Washington State where she will also sign the UK-WA memorandum of understanding.
Finally, we will also be hosting a variety of events focussed on promoting UK culture, with a visit from the University of Birmingham’s Shakespeare Institute, and we will also be supporting the world premiere of “Before the Sword” by British playwright Andrew Alty, which will be showing at the New Conservatory Theatre Center in San Francisco from 15 September. It promises to be a busy – and culturally enriching – month.
Until next time –
Joe White MBE
Tech Envoy to the US & British Consul General San Francisco

ECONOMIC INSTITUTE SHARES INSIGHTS ON GENERATIVE AI
Economic Institute Friends and Partners:
The capabilities and implications of recent advances in artificial intelligence are occupying media, governments, and board rooms around the world. The San Francisco Bay Area stands at the center of that conversation. Of 13 Generative AI companies with valuations of over $1 billion 7 are Bay Area headquartered. Open AI’s president Sam Altman has called San Francisco the best place to start an AI company, a new zone designated “Cerebral Valley” is attracting AI startups from across the country, and expanding AI companies are growing their office footprint in the city.
The debate over how AI will impact business and society as applications become ubiquitous and Generative AI advances has just begun. This summer I had the opportunity to participate in a series of discussions organized by our partners at Reinvent Futures, led by former Managing Director of Wired Magazine Peter Leyden. On three occasions approximately 250 leaders in the field – from tech gurus with decades of experience to young AI founders – met to discuss the future in a conversation that produced remarkable insights. We are happy to share a summary of these discussions, which you can access through these links:

BAB CEO UPDATE:
'BARBENHEIMER' SHOWS POWER OF US-UK PARTNERSHIP IN ACTION
| |
Duncan Edwards
CEO
BritishAmerican Business
| |
As someone who likes to keep on top of what’s going on in popular culture, I loved the concept of Barbenheimer; we didn’t try to watch both films on opening day, but we did go to see them on consecutive Saturday nights in the local non-profit movie house in north west CT where we live. You will have your own views as to the artistic merit of each film but both are fantastic examples of Transatlantic co-operation. Oppenheimer’s theme of course, if rather tangentially, is perhaps the greatest historic moment of such collaboration, but more prosaically, half the on-screen talent are Brits and the director, a dual citizen. And Barbie, that most American of icons, was made almost entirely in my home town of Watford, where British off-screen talent has built a globally brilliant reputation...

AIVIA Jewelry solves the challenges of traveling with jewelry. The AIVIA set is a collection of fine jewelry that folds flat into a slim travel case, it’s the size of a credit card and just a little thicker. It’s the perfect travel companion if you’re trying to pack lightly as each piece can be worn multiple ways, to suit any occasion or opportunity.
The idea for creating flatpack jewelry came about while founder Anna was waiting for her Green Card. She was traveling frequently between Glasgow and San Francisco and realized how awkward it was to travel with jewelry as it often became bent, broken or tangled. So she set to designing a solution, and developed a set of jewelry that is both convenient and multifunctional.

What does it mean to live in your element? It begins with the acknowledgment that home is the most important place there is. It should be everything we can imagine, and more.
At Landsea Homes, we believe that all of the expertise, innovation and care that go into designing and building your new home should be felt and sensed at first sight, and for decades to come. The harmony between the outside environment, and the inside livability. The form, and the function. The beauty, and the brains. From the moment you enter, it should feel like a celebration of life and space.
Living in your element, therefore, is what happens when your home and its surroundings change the way you live, work and play.
Landsea Homes was named the 2022 winner of the prestigious Builder of the Year award, presented by BUILDER magazine, in recognition of a historical year of transformation.
