Dear Members and Friends of the BABC,

 

On behalf of the Directors of the British American Business Council of Northern California, I would like to express our sadness as we heard the news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. Our heartfelt condolences are with the Royal Family and all those around the world mourning her loss. She will be remembered as a remarkable woman and leader, whose grace, dignity, and devotion to a life of service was unparalleled. Members of the British American Business community in the Bay Area have been sharing their condolences, reflections and memories of the Queen and the BABC has put together a tribute linked here.

 

As the summer comes to a close, we kick off our Fall programming and while some of it has been postponed to respect the mourning period for the loss of Her Majesty, our calendar remains full (see event details below). Highlights include a Top-Tier Member Reception with the Deputy Consul General, Tammy Sandhu MBE (one week from today), a Happy Hour organized by our Young Professionals Group at Wingtip, and a few events focused on HR and People including a breakfast webinar on HR related Cross Border Data Protection, a Global Words of Wisdom’ discussion around Culture in the workplace, and of course the much-loved Christmas Lunch. Dear BABC Members,  

 

You will have all seen the announcement of the death of Her Majesty The Queen. The last ten days have been a moment of profound grief and loss in the UK. 

 

Many tributes from around the world and here in California have already been paid to Her achievements, personal qualities and devotion to duty. I want to acknowledge in particular Her exceptional dedication to promoting the UK’s international standing and global relationships. Her charm, wisdom and the depth and range of Her international experience through countless engagements unquestionably made Her our greatest diplomat.  

 

As we emerge from this period of National Mourning and of personal grief for The Royal Family, I will echo the words of His Majesty The King in a statement, saying that ‘her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.’  

 

Thank you to everyone who has paid their respects, whether through signing a condolence book, sharing your personal stories, or reaffirming your commitment to the incalculable legacy of Her Late Majesty The Queen. Please join us in expressing our deepest sympathies to The Royal Family and our enduring support for His Majesty, King Charles III.  

 

Finally in what was ultimately a momentous week for the UK, former Foreign Secretary Liz Truss became the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Much like His Majesty The King, the new PM is no stranger to California, having visited the state during her time as Trade Secretary in 2021 where she met Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, CA Agriculture Secretary Karen Ross, the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz), and many business leaders across a diverse range of major industries. Many of those she met during her visit have already conveyed their congratulations and warm wishes. The UK- California relationship is incredibly vital and will no doubt continue to grow across our shared policy priorities well into the future. The team at the Consulate will continue to work diligently to help deepen those links in partnership with all of you. As the Prime Minister forms her new Cabinet and makes her ministerial appointments, we anticipate a busy autumn of visits, events, and opportunities for engagement and collaboration.  

 

We look forward to our ongoing partnership.

A congregation of 2,000 people including world leaders and royalty were at Westminster Abbey for the Queen's state funeral on Monday. Delivering the sermon, the Archbishop of Canterbury told mourners the "grief" felt around the world over the Queen's death "arises from her abundant life and loving service."
