First a little history lesson....

Nathan "Nearest" Green, known by those in his hometown of Lynchburg, Tenn., as Uncle Nearest, was the first African-American master distiller on record in the United States. He was also the first head stiller, now commonly referred to as master distiller, for Jack Daniel Distillery. He is now recognized by the distillery as having taught a young Jack Daniel how to make Tennessee Whiskey. Green is also thought to have helped perfect the Lincoln County Process, a special sugar maple charcoal filtering method required to be considered Tennessee Whiskey, named after the county in which he lived and made whiskey.

This whiskey shows a bombastic nose of maple candy, vanilla fudge, black tea, and toasted tangerine peel. In tasting, the spirit starts out with more indulgent flavors of honey and corn fritter before finishing with a pleasant kick of star anise spice. -

Sarsaparilla and vanilla lead the nose and palate. There’s a strong drying feel to the sip, which sizzles with ginger and cinnamon right into the toasty vanilla and almond finish. Made with a blend of 8- to 11-year-old whiskies.

A 7-year-old minimum whiskey, Uncle Nearest 1884 commemorates the final year Nearest is believed to have put his own whiskey into barrels before retiring from distilling. Uncle Nearest 1884 is unique in taste and curation while celebrating Nearest's legacy.

About the Whiskey

Uncle Nearest Premium Whiskey is made using local ingredients from Tennessee. Our Premium Silver is an intricate 11-step, 25-day process utilizing a one-of-a-kind triple charcoal mellowing system that was hand-drawn and fabricated by engineers, exclusively for Uncle Nearest. No other whiskey in the world utilizes this proprietary process. It is our Silver whiskey that will become our Aged after a minimum of seven years. As we still have time before our silver turns to gold, we are working with two local distilleries still making Tennessee whiskey the way Nearest made it intricately by hand, placing it in the barrel close to the same 110-proof Nearest was known for, and pouring it out at just the right age, taste and color for a surprisingly smooth finish.
