Message from the BALIF Board

A year ago today, I woke up on Election Day exhilarated about having our first woman President.  Before I went to bed, I was crying and despondent.  The vision was not to be.  It has been a very hard year.  Most recently, thousands of people lost their homes and businesses in the Sonoma and Napa fires. Many BALIF members suffered losses or near misses.  Contemplating the destruction has focused my mind on what is truly important - cherished people near and far.

In times of stress and adversity, it is important to have gratitude.  Among other things, I am grateful to BALIF.  In the face of a hostile Presidential administration, BALIF is working harder than ever to effect social change for the positive.  We recently passed an unprecedented number of resolutions at CCBA, taking a highly visible leadership role as the progressive bar association to emulate.  We raised over $5,000 for CLRA at our Halloween event.  And on Sunday, November 5, BALIF hosted a beer bust benefiting the Napa Community Animal Response Team, assisting people and their pets affected by the wildfires.

There are many opportunities to get involved with BALIF.  There is a happy hour at Divas on November 9; the mentorship program is in full swing; and the annual holiday party is on December 14.  You can help with Gala, Judiciary, Social Action - there are opportunities galore. There are also opportunities with the BALIF Foundation.
On this one year anniversary of a terrible election, I encourage you to take one moment to think of something for which you are truly grateful.  And I am truly grateful for my friends and colleagues at BALIF, who enrich my life immeasurably.  Thank you.  We will get through this together.

Sincerely ,

Jamie Dupree
BALIF Programs Committee Chair

Giving to the BALIF Foundation

Please consider making a tax deductible donation to the BALIF Foundation.  The Foundation recently launched and is working to assist BALIF in bringing LGBT judges to the bench and supporting scholarships, stipends and fellowships for law students and attorneys working in the LGBTQ community.  You can donate here.  In the four years ahead, we believe the Foundation's work will be critical in helping to protect our community.

And the Foundation is looking for Founding Circle members through the end of 2017 - pledge and pay as little as $1,000 to always be listed as a Founding Circle member of the BALIF Foundation.

For more information about the BALIF Foundation or how to get involved, contact Jamie Dupree [email protected].
BALIF & The BALIF Foundation

BALIF is the Bay Area's LGBT Bar Association, which is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit, which can engage in political activity.  Its Board members are elected by the BALIF membership and chair various committees of the BALIF bar association.

The BALIF Foundation is BALIF's charitable arm.  Donations to the BALIF Foundation are tax deductible because it is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.  The BALIF Foundation is dedicated to increasing the number of LGBT judges on the bench through educational programming, supporting LGBT community organizations, and providing scholarships, summer stipends, and fellowships for LGBT  law students and young attorneys seeking to help the LGBT community through legal work.  It gave its inaugural summer fellowship for the summer of 2017.
