Virtual Event
Presented by BALIF's Young Lawyers & Law Students Committee

BALIF is transitioning to a pod-based mentorship program. What is a pod-based mentorship program, you ask?! Well, mentees will be assigned to a pod or 'House' of legal professionals arranged by practice areas and interests. Each House will ideally consist of students, post-bar graduates, and attorneys ranging from junior to senior levels. Houses will allow for flexibility with meetups to accommodate for social distancing needs and will additionally allow junior attorneys to receive mentorship from senior attorneys. We require that each House meet virtually or in person at least three times a year, but individual interaction and mentorship between House members is highly encouraged.

At this event, mentors and mentees with meet with their pods virtually! we hope you can attend! Please RSVP!

If anyone has any questions, feel free to reach out to Christine Capuyan or Stephan Ferris at newlawyers@balif.org.

BALIF Congratulates Martin J. Jenkins on
Historic Appointment to California Supreme Court
Yesterday, Governor Newsome nominated the Honorable Martin J. Jenkins to the Supreme Court of California. Justice Jenkins would be the first openly LGBTQI+ person and only the third African American to serve on the high court. Read BALIF's full statement on Justice Jenkins' nomination here. In his acceptance speech, Justice Jenkins remarked:

I want to say to some young person who may be out there watching today who is struggling with their identity. Anyone who knows me knows my identity has been as a gay man perhaps the greatest challenge of my life. And it has not been easy. But I want to say today to those young people who may be watching and those who may hear about what has transpired here: that I'm not here in spite of the struggle, I am here because of the struggle. It has deepened my character, afforded me sensibilities about the world, and about people who are not so willing to accept that people can love differently than they do, but nevertheless love sincerely, genuinely and affectively. I want these young people to know that living a life of authenticity is the greatest gift you can give yourself. And if you do that, you too will find yourself in a position where people see you and really see you and who you are, your authentic self. And in the extraordinary opportunity I'm being offered today, I thank you, Governor Newsom, for seeing me and I promise to do my best to dispatch the enormous responsibilities that are incumbent with this great office.

Web Survey
The AABA In-House Committee is launching the second In-House Compensation Survey that will run until November 4, 2020! The survey is available here.

AABA will generate a report from the data collected in this survey that will provide insight into the typical salary and benefits an in-house legal team member in the Bay Area receives, and empower individuals to ensure they are receiving adequate compensation based on their experience and industry. Participation in this anonymous survey is open to all members of an in-house legal department in the Bay Area, and is not limited to Asian-American individuals.

Please note that in order to receive the report generated from the survey results, you must submit your e-mail address in the second form linked at the end of the survey, or be a member of AABA. Questions can be directed to AABA.InHouseCommittee@gmail.com.
San Francisco Queer Nightlife Fund
San Francisco Queer Nightlife Fund (www.sfqueernightlifefund.org). We are organizing a direct relief mutual-aid fund for LGBTQ nightlife workers-i.e. DJs, servers, artists, bartenders. Our goal is to raise 200K to provide enough relief to 200 LMI workers for lifeline expenses (e.g. food, shelter, basic telecom, medical necessities).

We need support from members of the LGBTQ community who still have livelihoods and savings during this time of crisis, to help those who work paycheck-to-paycheck and do not have savings to weather unemployment and the COVID-19 economic downturn. We have only raised 36.5% of our 200K goal, and have already received over $235,053 in minimum funding requests from 201 applicants.
