BART's Clipper-only Pilot Program
Starting August 5th, 2019

July 23, 2019

Dear Members:

Starting on August 5th at the 19 th  Street Station, BART will begin expanding the number of stations where the only fare product available for purchase is the reusable, reloadable, and regionally accepted Clipper card. BART is rolling out a pilot program to eliminate the sale of paper magstripe tickets at the following four stations this summer with system-wide expansion expected in 2020:

  • 19th Street on August 5th
  • Embarcadero on August 19th
  • Powell Street on September 3rd
  • Downtown Berkeley on September 24th

While magstripe paper tickets will no longer be available for purchase at these stations listed above, riders will still be able to use paper tickets to enter or exit through fare gates . Riders will also be able to add enough fare to a paper ticket to exit a station using the machines located inside the paid area of each station.
