Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Invites You to a Business After Hours and Open House in January
Join us in sharing your business and community thoughts on how to best utilize the new space

After more than 20 years at our previous location at 52 Main Street, in a building provided to us by the Town of Bucksport, the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce was able to find temporary quarters right next door. The Verona Grange was gracious enough to allow us to share their space.

This all took place back in April of this year. Since then, through a series of events, we have a signed purchase and sale agreement to buy the Grange building, the closing to take place in August 2019.

In January we will be launching a capital campaign to raise $110,000 to be used for the purchase and renovation to the building. A Business after Hours and Open House will be held at the Chamber of Commerce building at 54 Main Street on Monday, January 14, 2018 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Join us in sharing your business and community thoughts, to view our new home, our renovation plans and other campaign details.
Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce Presented Checks to Local Organizations
On Friday, December 14 The Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce and Hannaford presented checks to Bucksport Community Concerns and the MLS Friday Food Program

In October, the Bucksport Bay Area Chamber of Commerce held the 10th Annual Ghostport, ME event downtown which includes the “Jonathan Buck’s Race to the Grave” coffin race. Employees from Hannaford in Bucksport competed against two other teams and secured the first place spot, allowing them to donate a $500 check co-sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank and PCT Communications to the charity organization of their choice.

Hannaford selected the Miles Lane Elementary School Friday Food Program. This program provides snacks and meals to MLS students over the weekend and holiday breaks, free of charge. The approximate cost of a bag, per week, per student is $5. Store Manager, Eric Breton matched their winning check totaling a contribution of $1,000 to the MLS Friday Food Program.

In addition, this year at Tozier's Turkey Trail the Chamber collected donations to help the Bucksport Community Concerns food pantry as they have experienced continuous flooding this season and endured many unexpected expenses. Leslie Wombacher, Executive Director presented Marsha Mushrall with a check for $310!

Thursday, December 20, 2018

Everyone is invited to share their holiday spirit at 5:30 pm on Thursday, December 20, 2018. We will gather at Verona Wine and Design, 77 Main St., Bucksport then board the school bus for transportation about Town for Christmas caroling. The bus will return to VWD in approximately 1 ½ hours where we will partake in refreshments and socializing. This is year #3 for this event and the numbers are growing every year. Please join us in celebrating Christmas in our community!

Thanks to The Bridge Church, First Student Transportation and Verona Wine and Design for teaming up to make this happen.
Storefront Decorating Contest
New this year! We've made a few changes in the downtown Christmas decorating process. Instead of town funds being used to place Christmas trees in the town, we're looking for businesses to take their decorating into their own hands!

All businesses in town are encouraged to participate - those in the "downtown district" as well as those way out of town.

Once your business is decorated for the holidays, send us some photos of it. You can email them to chris.grindle@bucksportmaine.gov to be entered for judging. Submissions will be posted to the Town of Bucksport's Facebook page where the first and second place winner will be chosen through votes and shared by our online community. This is a great opportunity for businesses to receive positive holiday press and promotion alone with other area organizations together.

Prizes awarded to first and second place. First place $100 Visa gift card, second place $50 Visa gift card.

Storefronts/yard must be decorated by Friday, December 21, 2018 (don't forget to submit photos for judging!)
Judging takes place Christmas week! Winners announced on December 28, 2019.

For more information visit the Town of Bucksport's Facebook Page or contact Chris Grindle at 207.610.9793 or email chris.grindle@bucksportmaine.gov

"Bohemian Rhapsody"
December 21-23, 2018
134 minutes

Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury. Freddie defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound. They reach unparalleled success, but in an unexpected turn Freddie, surrounded by darker influences, shuns Queen in pursuit of his solo career. Having suffered greatly without the collaboration of Queen, Freddie manages to reunite with his bandmates just in time for Live Aid. While bravely facing a recent AIDS diagnosis, Freddie leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. Queen cements a legacy that continues to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day.

Bucksport YMCA has opened the Ice Rink!
We are proud to announce that the Bucksport Municipal Ice Rink is open for limited skating during daylight hours! Our weather dependent winter hours will be:

Open skating: Daylight-9pm everyday
Warming hut: 9am-7pm M-F and Noon-4pm Sat/Sun

Please stay within boundaries marked by cones to help us preserve our ice! Clearing of snow 12/17 revealed some solid ice on about half our rink. To allow for dicey December slush/ice to become thick January ice, we have closed half of our surface to skating. Please enjoy full use of the warming shack tomorrow from 3pm-7pm and skating from sunrise to 9pm. Expect bumps near the boards and smooth skating everywhere else.

Looking forward, reports call for rain and warm temps later this week. This could be a great thing for our surface moving into late December! Big thank you to the Bucksport Fire Department & the Bucksport YMCA Sharpen your skates folks! For updates please visit the Bucksport Recreation Facebook page!

IRS News
1. Latest IRS video details options to pay balance due tax returns

It’s always best for taxpayers, including businesses and self-employed individuals, to file and pay on time. However, if the tax due can’t be paid at the time of filing, taxpayers should still file and pay as much as possible to avoid penalties and interest and keep any balance due to a minimum.

Watch Online Payment Agreement Overview for more information on the available options to pay a balance due when not paid in full, including:
  • A short-term payment plan to pay within 11-120 days.
  • A long-term payment plan, also called an installment agreement, to pay the balance due in monthly installment payments.

2. IRS launches Instagram account

As part of a larger mission of helping individual and business taxpayers understand and meet their tax responsibilities, the IRS recently announced its debut on Instagram, adding this platform to its social media portfolio.

The IRSNews Instagram account will offer taxpayers the latest information on a variety of topics, especially as they face changes for the upcoming 2019 filing season related to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.

3. Tax reform changes qualified moving expense reimbursements

Under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, employers must include moving expense reimbursements in employees’ taxable wages.

Generally, members of the U.S. Armed Forces can exclude qualified moving reimbursements if:
  • They’re on active duty.
  • They move per a military order and incident to a permanent change of station.
  • The moving expenses would qualify as a deduction if they didn’t get reimbursement.
Employers may exclude any 2018 reimbursements or payments on behalf of employees for a move that took place before Jan. 1, 2018, and would have been deductible had they been paid before that date.

4. Tax law creates new opportunity zone program

Recent changes in the tax law created qualified opportunity zones to encourage tax-favored investment in distressed communities throughout the country and U.S. territories. Under the new law, investors may be able to defer tax on almost all capital gains they invest after Dec. 31, 2017, through Dec. 31, 2026.

For a complete list of opportunity zones, see Notice 2018-48. More information is on the Tax Reform page of IRS.gov.

5. Tax reform affects employee achievement awards

The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act prohibits certain property as an employee achievement award.

The law allows employers to deduct the cost of certain awards and exclude them from employees’ income.
