BC’s Community Response Networks prepare for World Elder Abuse
Awareness Day on June 15
In preparation for World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) 2025, the Maple Ridge, Pitt Meadows, Katzie CRN and partners planted and shared over 300 purple iris bulbs – now blooming across community gardens. Our 90+ Community Response Networks (CRNs) are marking the June 15 event with teas, fairs, flag raisings, and more.
This year’s theme, “Be Bold – Age with Attitude,” celebrates the strength and resilience of older adults while promoting dignity and freedom from abuse. The BC CRN Admin team also hosted WEAAD orientations, inspiring creative community plans. Everyone is encouraged to join by wearing purple, visiting seniors, spreading kindness, and attending the national webinar on June 11.

Addressing Ageism in BC: Findings From the Seniors Advocate’s Survey
A new survey from the Office of the Seniors Advocate reveals that 84% of respondents see ageism as a serious issue, with over half having experienced it personally. The report highlights five key areas where ageism shows up most – health care, media, employment, safety, and social inclusion. Seniors report feeling dismissed, excluded, or underestimated, especially in the workplace. The survey calls for more public education, age-inclusive policies, and intergenerational programs to combat stereotypes and promote respect for older adults.

2025 BC CRN Conference Aims to Prevent Abuse Through Community Connection
In-Person Event
October 7 - 9, 2025
Invitations have gone out to our members for the 2025 BC CRN Conference, Oct 7-9 at the River Rock Resort & Casino in Richmond, BC. The organizing committee has worked very hard to build a fun and engaging program for our time together. (Did we say, karaoke and open mic?).
Register early to help us be able to include as many representatives as possible! A limited number of bursaries will be available to cover the costs for a second delegate from a CRN to attend.
Future conferences have not been confirmed, so you’ll want to take part in this one. We are noting dietary restrictions including the request for an all-chocolate event! Don’t miss out on the opportunity to connect with your BC CRN counterparts.
