July 2024

Hanging Up the Hammock

It always seems so far off – summer and all it offers. Yet here we are! July and August are the months for long evenings at home or by a lake, camping or hiking, or traveling to faraway lands. Some will be working hard, keeping clients cool or fighting wildfires. Whatever your summer offers, enjoy what you can and stay safe in the others.

It was busy, but June brought a lot to our CRNs. WEAAD, National Indigenous Peoples Day and meeting the new Seniors’ Advocate offered celebration and gratitude while still educating the public about elder abuse, neglect and self-neglect. BC CRN did some heavy planning beyond supporting WEAAD, including hosting the AGM, updating safety plans for summer emergencies and onboarding our new board director Gurmit Sandhu. In this newsletter, we bring you stories about all of these plus the usual CRNs in the Community and Tech Tips.

Like yourselves, some staff will rotate through summer vacations, putting our newsletter on its usual hiatus until September. We will continue to post news stories, but on a slimmer diet. (Think of it as a summer salad thing!) Have a safe and healthy summer!

Featured WEAAD Events 2024

June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) and it is the highlight of the year for us at BC CRNs. All throughout the month, events and workshops rolled out, painting the province purple with flowers, signs, banners, lights and parades.

We can’t possibly list all the events that went on throughout the month of June but we want to send a huge THANK YOU to all the CRNs and individuals that sent in pictures and reports and tagged us on Facebook. It was our biggest and best so far.

How to Zoom the Screen on Your Computer or Device

Most websites are formatted to display in an ideal size and esthetic for the general user. Some websites show up with really small words that can be difficult to read for people with vision challenges, necessitating the visitor to magnify the view. Sadly, not many websites have built-in accessibility functions, so here are a few ways to enlarge your view for easier reading.

FEATURED STORIES

National Indigenous Peoples Day: A Time to Celebrate Culture that May Trigger Elders

National Indigenous Peoples Day was designated as an annual celebration of culture and heritage across Canada. But the day may be a painful reminder of past trauma for Indigenous Elders and vulnerable people who experienced abuse or neglect resulting from racism, the legacy of residential schools and/or “Indian hospitals.”

Emergency Preparedness: Keeping Seniors Safe During the Hottest Months

According to the Canadian Red Cross, seniors are most at risk during emergencies. Natural events, such wildfires, heat waves and other disasters can severely affect older adults as they are more likely to have issues with heating and air conditioning equipment, accessing food and less optimal housing conditions. These all affect both the mental and physical health of vulnerable adults. There are a few steps to prepare for the unexpected that will make things easier for them and their family members or caregivers.
