Learning, Fun and Fellowship + Members Like You

June is jam packed with education and events. We’re hosting the It’s Not Right Workshop and an Ageism Presentation in the first week of June. World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is June 15. It's not too late to plan WEAAD outreach and events (plenty of ideas and downloads below), along with two online presentations to attend and share. June is also the start to summer, so pour yourself a cool drink and soak in the stories about local people, just like you, who are making a difference for older and vulnerable people in their communities.

TEAM MEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Mentor Sarah Gibson

Sarah Gibson joined the BC CRN in September of 2022. She has a light, upbeat energy to her and laughs readily when the interview is interrupted by technical glitches. When asked about her life and work experiences, and what led to her involvement with BC CRN, she simply states that she seems to naturally move into work and volunteering opportunities with the various stages of her life, gravitating to ‘appropriate’ avenues of service that parallel each chapter.

CRNs IN THE COMMUNITY

Intergenerational Fun, Food and a Fellowship Award

This month’s CRN news covers stories from intergenerational events and building new community alliances to online cooking classes for homebound adults. Creating connection is the theme in May.

International Transgender Day of Visibility in Nanaimo

Jane Osborne, BC CRN Regional Mentor of Central and North Vancouver Island, shares with us Nanaimo’s event on the 2023 International Transgender Day of Visibility. The day is held annually to celebrate the lives and contributions of trans people, while also drawing attention to the poverty, discrimination and violence the community faces. It was also an intergenerational event that brought out allies of all ages, families and the local mayor.

FEATURED STORIES

Intergenerational Relationships: An Antidote to Ageism in Canada

When the UN and WHO released the landmark Global Report on Ageism in March, 2021, they declared combating ageism as one of three action areas for the Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021–2030). How society thinks, feels and acts towards people based on their age stigmatizes older people, resulting in poor health and economic wellbeing. Intergenerational programming is an effective antidote to the ageism epidemic.

MMIWG Honoured on Red Dress Day, May 5, 2023

This day is set aside to raise awareness of the overwhelming violence and injustices suffered by Indigenous communities and to stand in solidarity with survivors and their friends and families.
