Showing Our Thanks
October reminds us to show our thanks to so many people: the vulnerable and older seniors we serve, our community partners and all the volunteers who make it possible to deliver activities, education and one-to-one services. As we enter this season of gratitude, know that we are always grateful to you.
We are closing September out with the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and opening October with National Seniors Day. These are both important events as we honour those who have made sacrifices, lost so much and yet continue to contribute to their communities. Fittingly, we are hosting the See Something, Say Something! workshop on October 3rd which will help everyone be better allies and advocates.
While we are moving into cooler fall weather, there are still 390 active wildfires in B.C. In August and September we posted tips to help people stay safe at home. Please keep a careful watch over your own home and those you care for or serve.
Please continue to visit our website often for more upcoming event notifications, including updates regarding the final Provincial Learning Events of the year. Meanwhile, be sure to send us news of your past and upcoming community events (tricks, treats and pumpkin pie pics are all welcome)!

Regional Mentor Jennifer Lazenby
Jennifer Lazenby is the definition of a Vancouver Island girl. She has volunteered and worked with many local organizations in the Duncan/Cowichan region over the last 25 years. Her passion for working with seniors and vulnerable adults began through an invitation to help at a ground-level position with Volunteer Cowichan in 2013. When Jennifer began hearing first-hand the challenges and concerns of aging adults in her community, her innate sense of caring created the desire to protect the dignity and independence of aging adults through education and resources, which has continued to guide her life’s work to date.

This is a day of reflection on the impact of residential schools and the forced adoption of Indigenous children – hundreds of children never made it home. The theme this year is education, representing the best place to start for increasing awareness and allyship about this significant day in Canadian history.

National Seniors Day Oct 1: An Occasion to Celebrate
National Seniors Day on October 1, formally known as the UN International Day for Older Persons, was declared in Canada in 2010 to acknowledge the contributions of older people. Many Canadians over 65 are active, vibrant and contributing to the economy, with 14 percent continuing to work and volunteer for many years. In these times of hiring shortages and unfilled jobs, many seniors are filling a gap in the labour market. And many older people use their many skills to contribute to their communities from helping with facilitation and chairing boards or fundraisers to reviewing HR manuals and teaching computer skills in seniors centres.
