Community Roots, Collective Strength: BC CRN Conference 2025

This October 7–9, BC CRN hosts its once-every-three-years provincial conference at River Rock Casino Resort in Richmond, bringing together CRN Coordinators, Regional Mentors, and the Provincial Team for learning, connection, and celebration. Highlights include keynotes from BC Seniors Advocate Dan Levitt and psychotherapist Jodie McDonald, panel discussions on strong partnerships, and interactive sessions exploring diversity and collaborative responses to adult abuse. Emcee Maria Turnbull will guide participants through three days of practical strategies, inspiring talks, and relationship-building opportunities. The conference underscores BC CRN’s unique strength: each network rooted in local communities, yet united in collective action to prevent adult abuse, neglect, and self-neglect.

CRNs in the Community: Stronger Together - Collective Actions to Protect Older Adults

Community Response Networks (CRNs) are actively raising awareness, educating, and preventing abuse, neglect, and self-neglect of vulnerable and older adults. Through a variety of events, workshops, and ongoing programs, they foster connection, inclusion, and empowerment for participants. Highlights of their work include interactive wellness workshops, creative and artistic activities, intergenerational events that bring youth and seniors together, and accessible social drop-in groups designed to reduce isolation. These initiatives demonstrate how collaboration with community partners strengthens local networks, connects people to vital resources, and creates safer, more supportive environments for older adults.

BC CRN Spotlight: Meet Nasra Mire, Regional Mentor for the Sunshine Coast

Nasra Mire brings over 20 years of global and local experience in humanitarian service, non-profits, and community development to her new role as Regional Mentor for the Sunshine Coast. She is passionate about raising awareness of adult abuse, neglect, and self-neglect, and believes the voices of older adults should be central in our communities. When she’s not mentoring or building networks, Nasra enjoys gardening, yoga, lakeside summers with her children, and expressing her creativity through art.

Canada Launches First Cross-Sector Anti-Scam Coalition

Canada’s major financial, telecom, and technology companies are joining forces with law enforcement and government to form the Canadian Anti-Scam Coalition (CASC) – the country’s largest coordinated effort to combat scams. The CASC will launch a national education campaign this fall, aimed at protecting Canadians from increasingly sophisticated scams, including those using artificial intelligence.
