Processor and Hatchery Signing of Contracts (BC101 Form)

Although the Chicken Board has not received any official written communication, we are aware that some BC hatcheries and processors continue to refuse to sign the prescribed BC101 contracts between growers, hatcheries, and processors, effective quota period A-194. The unsigned contracts are outside of our General Orders and will be dealt with by the Board in due course.

The BC101 contract outlines the roles of each party: the processor representative specifies the target weight of the birds, the grower determines the number of days required to reach that target weight, and the hatchery representative provides the necessary number of chicks, coordinates placement dates, and collaborates with the processor to establish the shipping date.

The Board understands that a contract—whether signed or not—can still be legally binding if the parties have completed their terms. Courts may consider the conduct, actions, and communications between the parties (grower, hatchery, and processor) to determine intent, and an implied contract may arise even in the absence of a signed document.

The Chicken Board emphasizes that all parties remain part of the regulated marketing system, and the General Orders continue to apply. The Board is prepared to take any action necessary to enforce the General Orders and maintain orderly marketing. All parties are encouraged to continue to follow all General Orders up to and including the signing of BC101 contracts.

More information will be communicated, as necessary.

Applications for Emergency Importation of

Live Avian Metapneumovirus (aMPV) Vaccines March 2025

The Canadian Centre for Veterinary Biologics (CCVB) of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is accepting applications from veterinarians for the emergency importation of live avian metapneumovirus (aMPV) vaccines. This is an important step in the response to deal with the challenges the turkey industry in Canada has been facing due to aMPV over the past year. The CCVB is allowing this because aMPV is an emerging disease, and had significant impacts on the Canadian poultry industry and no suitable veterinary biologics are licensed in Canada.

Although this issue is not currently impacting broilers, it is

important to keep on our radar.

The notice to industry can be found here.

Thomas & Catherine Cuthbert of Southcoast Agro Farms Ltd. have been named the 2025 Outstanding Young Farmers for British Columbia and the Yukon

Thomas and Catherine, along with their four children, operate their farm in Ladysmith, BC, on Vancouver Island. Their farm is known for producing high-quality broiler chickens for Island Farmhouse Poultry, and they began self-marketing free-range roasting chickens in 2018.

In 2022, they expanded into grass-fed beef, growing their herd to meet increasing demand. In addition to their farming operation, Thomas also manages a nearby family dairy farm. As fourth-generation farmers, they are committed to sharing their knowledge with their children and providing fresh, local food to their community.

This prestigious recognition follows in the footsteps of Thomas's parents, Ben & Suzanne Cuthbert, who were honored as BC & Yukon Outstanding Young Farmers in 1996.

A big congratulations to Thomas & Catherine for their unwavering dedication and hard work in agriculture, setting a remarkable example of farming excellence!

We would also like to extend our congratulations to the runner-ups, Albert Gorter & Chelsea Enns of Little Qualicum Cheeseworks.

Both of these outstanding nominees are not only exceptional farmers but are also dedicated leaders in their industries.
