Bowling pins falling down from a strike in ten-pin bowling.
Let's Go Bowling!
Tournament Season is Here!
by Erik Gialdella, BCAW President
I always get a little bit more excited about this time of year, as we get into the winter and our bowlers begin to head off to their local and state tournaments, and finalize their plans to head out to the national tournaments.

One of the aspects I really enjoy is seeing how excited some of the more casual league bowlers react as they get ready to compete in these tournaments. You see a few more of them practicing, some purchasing new bowling balls, and several asking "what's the pattern like" for the tournament?

Many of the teams organize matching shirts and plan out their extracurricular events prior to leaving. Many of these bowlers, whether their average is 140 or 240 look forward to these tournaments all year long and it's a very unique added experience that the USBC gives its members that many other recreational sports do not have.

During your league announcements start adding a message wishing your bowlers luck as they head to the state tournament. Utilize this time to offer practice passes or coaching sessions for your bowlers. If you have a pro shop, offer a resurface and new grips package or a new ball special for those heading to the tournament. If you have the ability to take shirt orders for teams, look to offer a deal to get their shirts made with your center logo on it at an "at cost" or discounted price as a way to advertise your center while they are at their tournament. It gives your league bowlers a sense of "membership" or belonging.

Find opportunities to help your bowlers be better prepared heading to their tournaments and they will be more likely to stay involved in their leagues and local tournaments as well. Many bowlers stop participating because they no longer improve and get bored with the sport.

We have options heading into the tournaments to improve our bowlers' game and help them feel more confident. In turn, they will be more likely to stay active and get new people involved.

I wish all the competitors heading out to their local, state, and national tournaments the best of luck! Most importantly though, I hope you enjoy your time together and create memories that last a lifetime and make you want to come back and compete again next year.

Here's to high scores and lots of fun in 2019!

P.S.  One more exciting announcement for 2019 is that the BCAW has renewed our subscription with BPAA and Bowling University to offer our members another year of FREE online education. Last year, over 7,400 courses were taken on-line, an increase of over 45% from the prior year.

Will this be the year that you take advantage of this amazing training to better prepare your staff and improve customer relations? This year the BPAA Education department will be working to include new training on Crisis Management including: active shooter, robbery, and incident reporting. BCAW Member Spotlight

 Bennie & Laporsha Cooper
 Court Lanes Mill
 Milwaukee, WI

Bennie Cooper, with the help of his daughter Laporsha,   has entered into bowling center ownership in August   2018. Bennie and his center have been a part of urban   renewal in the Havenwoods north side neighborhood. In   their short time as a BCAW member center, they have   grown from 142 league bowlers to 309; they've added the new Marshall High School Bowling   Club, and a traveling league. When talking with Bennie recently, he had lots to share.

Please give a bit of history of how you started in the bowling industry.
I had started in 1988 as a house kid at Red Carpet. I bowl in many leagues. I've worked my way   up doing everything from house kid to bartender, to manager and now as owner of Court Lanes   Mill. All of this while working a second job. Always hustling, always working.
