Let's Go Bowling!
What Season Is It?
by Steve Cieslewicz, BCAW President
Well, it's bowling season, of course.

When I say bowling season, I mean this time of year. When tournaments are in FULL SWING!!! I recently drilled a ball for a bowler in a neighboring center, and he says to me... "Hey, how come nobody bowls tournaments anymore?"

I'm like, "How many tournaments do you want to bowl? I will hook you up." "You can?" says the bowler. "You bet I can. These are just a few of the tournaments that I am involved in helping run or set up. Valley, City, Men's State, High School, Youth State, Middle School State, Youth Pepsi, Men's Nationals, Pins Over Average, and 8 & 9 Pin Tap Tournament, etc. It's almost every weekend somewhere with a tournament."

People don't bowl 30 plus weeks a year because they don't like it, they do it because they love to bowl. So when someone says to me, nobody bowls tournaments anymore, which means we need to ask our league bowlers (as proprietors/managers) to participate in a tournament or two!

When our bowlers do well in a tournament, they feed off of that and want to bowl more. That's our primary goal. To get them and their friends/family to bowl more. I put together small squads to take to other bowling centers for their tournament. And in return, they all bring me a squad for my 9 pin tournament. Yes, its a little work on my part, but it gives me a chance to have some fun with my bowlers and it provides a great revenue stream on the backside when other proprietors come back to my center with their squads to bowl my tournament.

This is our last push for the bowling season in Wisconsin. In three months, most leagues and tournaments will be coming to a halt. Let's try and get a few of our customers motivated and partake in a tournament or two... In the end it will only help us and our sport.

The WiFi Company of Golden, Colorado has been a BCAW supplier member for two years. Founder John Bailey has been an avid bowler for 30 years and has put his IT background to work for bowling centers throughout the United States. As BPAA's preferred vendor and SMART BUY partner for WiFi services, special pricing has been established for our member centers.

In business since 2003, the WiFi Company has over 3,000 locations including 100 bowling centers using their service. Understanding the demographics of your guests is important to connect with and promote to them. With their Customer Connect system, information can be gathered to include email address, gender, age as well as their last visit and how many times they have visited your center.

Imagine being able to target directly through social media marketing to your guest by gender, age or even by type of phone. If you would like to trigger a campaign when a user logs in or logs off just to say thank you and offer them something special to come back. Their system does this.

If you would like to send out emails directly from their system it can do that as well. Your customers can be encouraged to post something positive to Facebook.   With data collection systems, you even know how many followers a guest has. They can also tell how many devices have passed your location without connecting. All this data will help you better market to your audience and bring in new customers. They can help you retain your VIP bowlers as well.

Get to know your customers before your competition does. Remember data and knowledge of your customers means more money in your pocket!
