Let's Go Bowling!
|
|
Greetings from BCAW
by Erik Gialdella, BCAW President
|
|
I recently got to sit in on a committee of volunteers dedicated their Sunday to provide input and feedback on the Middle and High School Bowling programs. It was such an honor to see the passion that these volunteers brought to the committee. It was a really good mix of coaches, proprietors, district coordinators, and a high school bowling team member. The committee is one of the first parts of the BCAW's "Seeing 2020 and Beyond" strategic planning initiative and a lot of great information came out of it to continue to build Middle and High School bowling in the Wisconsin. It is certainly clear there are extremely knowledgeable and passionate people about bowling and our youth in this state and I am excited to see the way the BCAW continues to move forward.
As we move into the summer, don't miss out on the BCAW Scholarship Golf Fundraiser on June 10th at the Par 4 Resort in Waupaca with a shotgun start at 11 am. You can register your team under the Events tab on the BCAW website. A portion of the money raised will go towards the
BCAW Center Employee Scholarships and the BCAW USBC Youth Scholarship.
This is also a reminder to tap into an extremely generous membership benefit the BCAW is offering this year. Make the BPAA's On Demand Online Training courses a must-do this summer. A couple of these training courses that are high value are the "Anti-Harassment" and "CPR Basics for Everyone" on demand courses
. These are done at your own pace and summer may be a great time to catch up on some education as you prepare to make the
2019-20 bowling season your best one yet!

Each year the Bowling Centers Association of Wisconsin conducts the Pepsi USBC Championships on behalf of the United States Bowling Congress. Starting with in-center qualifying at USBC youth certified leagues last fall in 90 bowling centers state-wide, the event progresses through the year with regional level competition in March. This year we had nearly 1,900 youth bowlers participating in one of 16 regional events.
The tournament culminated with the WI Pepsi State Championships in May with 108 boys and 63 girls qualifying for the state finals. This year we awarded over $21,000 in scholarships to youth bowlers in 12 age/gender based divisions.
With U8 & U10 bowlers progressing to the regional level for scholarships, the older age divisions advanced to the state finals which this year were held in the Madison Area. The girls were at Village Lanes Monona, while the boys were at Prairie Lanes in Sun Prairie. Boys & girls in the younger age divisions shared in a scholarship prize fund of $6,200 while the older bowlers took home $14,800 in scholarships, including $1,300 added money from BCAW for our "high score awards" at the regional & state level of competition.

BCAW administers the Wisconsin Middle School Bowling Club. One of the few state-wide middle school bowling programs in the country, we provide opportunities for kids to earn state championships in singles and team events. This year's Wisconsin Middle School State Bowling Championships were just contested at The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Green Bay.
This season we had 136 middle school teams, with 54 advancing to the state championships (42 boys/coed and 12 girls teams). Additionally, we held a singles competition with 240 players competing in one of seven divisions.

BCAW Announces Summer Hours

With the 2018-19 bowling season coming to an end, and many of our centers turning their thoughts to volleyball, horseshoes, or perhaps a well deserved vacation, the BCAW office staff also looks forward to finding time for outdoor activities and taking time off to enjoy family and friends.
As in past years, the BCAW office will be closed on Fridays beginning May 24th, running through Labor Day week (September 6th). Additionally, we will be operating on a limited hours schedule, Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. starting June 24th. We will resume our normal office hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. after Labor Day
(September 3rd). Lastly, the office will be closed the first week of July due to the shortened July 4th holiday week.
We encourage our members and others to feel free to contact the BCAW office through our general email (info@bowlwi.com) or by calling and leaving a voice mail at 262-783-4292. We will return messages as soon as possible.
Thank you for another great bowling season! If we don't see you over the summer at the BCAW Scholarship Golf Tournament or Bowlapalooza V, we hope to see you back on the lanes in the fall.
