Bowling pins falling down from a strike in ten-pin bowling.
Let's Go Bowling!
Greetings from BCAW
by Erik Gialdella, BCAW President
COVID-19, a term likely to go down in history as one of the most significant pandemics in the world. The effects have been felt on so many levels. The question still remains, what will be the impact on our bowling centers. The unknown of this creates such an emotional struggle. The reality is that we just don't know, and our bowling centers are fighting for survival.

The good news is that we have some wonderful leaders throughout the bowling industry. Our BPAA, BCAW, and other bowling organizations and companies have really stepped up to provide our centers with education and support. We have a very dedicated industry!

If you are on Facebook, join the "BPAA Networking" group. This group has been helpful with providing information on what centers are doing to stay relevant. If you have a question, this is a great place to ask it. This group is made up of center owners, managers, employees, state association leaders, and is also monitored by staff at BPAA.

While we have been fortunate enough to be given the ability to get most of our centers in Wisconsin back up and running, it is still very apparent that we are in a delicate situation. We never know when a case of the virus may hit our center. Whether it be an employee, guest, distributor, or contractor, if someone transmits the virus and has recently visited your center, the center will have procedures to follow. I recommend educating yourself with what procedures your local health department recommends in case this happens. Be proactive in learning the protocols that they want you to follow.

For many of us, the reality of this happening will not be an "if" but a "when". We will be facing these scenarios and it will be better to be educated and aware of what procedures your local health officials will want you to follow.

As we face uncertain times, please know that the BCAW is here to try and help bowling move forward. Bowling will survive this!

BCAW Scholarships Awarded
The Bowling Centers Association of Wisconsin (BCAW) established the BCAW Scholarship Program in 1995 to provide scholarships to employees of BCAW member bowling centers and their families. As a benefit of membership, BCAW has awarded over $100,000 to students continuing their education beyond high school. In addition to providing four $1,000 scholarships to a current employee and/or immediate family members of a BCAW member bowling center employee, BCAW also awards a $1,000 scholarship to a current USBC youth member bowling in a BCAW member center.  BCAW Scholarships are held at SMART and administered by the USBC.

All applicants must be a graduating high school senior or have a post high school diploma or equivalent; and be under the age of 22 as of February 1, 2020.   This year's selection committee had a challenging job selecting just five award winners for the 2020 BCAW Scholarships.

$1,000  Katelyn Holz , Super Bowl
$1,000  Collin Krachey , Prairie Lanes
$1,000  Tyler VanLanen , The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley
$1,000  Zachary Brzeczkowski , Village Lanes Green Bay
$1,000  Isaac Albaugh , Tower Junction

In 2016 BCAW created the "BCAW Award of Excellence" to recognize contributions to BCAW and bowling throughout Wisconsin.  Those honored are selected annually from nominations submitted to BCAW for consideration.  The nine-point criteria for this award focuses on demonstrated results in helping to grow bowling not only in their center but in their community and the state.  Supporting the BCAW and its programs through engaged participation will be a hallmark of recipients.

BCAW is committed to recognizing outstanding contributions to the bowling industry in Wisconsin with equal opportunity for this award without regard to the size of the bowling center they are affiliated with.  To that end, the goal is to have two "BCAW Award of Excellence" honorees each year based on center size; 12 lanes and fewer and over 12 lanes.
