HEAD PIN NEWS
Let's Go Bowling!
Greetings from BCAW
by Yvonne Bennett
It's hard to believe the fall bowling season is in full swing as we approach the holiday season!  November is often a time for reflection, giving thanks and a renewed sense of optimism.  For BCAW and our member centers, I believe this is especially true!

The year 2017 will go down in our association's history as perhaps one of the most successful.  While our continued growth in membership is impressive with 210 members, up from 200 in 2016, 191 in 2015 and 172 in 2014 . . . I'm most proud of the work we have done to create more opportunities for you to enhance your profitability.

We continue to strive to find ways to help you generate more bowling business and awareness.  The Wisconsin Adult-Youth Scholarship Tournament and the Miller Lite Wisconsin Adult Pins Over Average Tournament are examples of programs you can conduct in your center with easy to run formats flexible to meet your needs.

For our members who are bars & taverns; supper clubs & pizzerias . . . BCAW is continuing our outreach to find ways to help you too.  As smaller "centers" with between two and eight lanes, bowling is not your core revenue source but it is an important element of your overall business.  And for so many, the allure of "vintage" resonates with your local community and others who love bowling.
----------------------------

Speaking of Vintage . . .

BCAW hosted what is believed to be the first ever tour of vintage bowling alleys on October 31st.  The event was a big success in terms of providing opportunities for four of our members to showcase their business.  All were excited with the concept and welcomed our group during our stop to bowl as part of the scheduled 11 hour journey through Jefferson & Dodge counties.

  ---------------------------------------
This year BCAW joined the Tavern League of Wisconsin as an affiliate member.  We
exhibited at both their April & October conventions as a way to meet more of our members who are also involved with the Tavern League.  With the positive feedback from the April event in La Crosse, and after listening to our members suggest a shorter BCAW Annual Meeting, Conference & Trade Show . . . we changed our big meeting from two days in December to a single day immediately preceding the Fall TLW Event in Appleton.  Response was very positive!  We had more bowling center proprietors and managers at our 2017 Annual Meeting, Awards Luncheon & Trade Show than any time over the past five years.  We look to continue building on our membership with the Tavern League and are planning to host our 2018 BCAW Annual Meeting in conjunction with their Fall Convention in The Dells in early October.  Look for more information in early 2018.
 ---------------------------

What's coming up for the rest of 2017 and in 2018 . . .
Over the past year, BCAW has made a commitment to bring quality education to our members.  In July we hosted the BPAA Bowling University Management School at Dale's Weston Lanes.  The 26 proprietors & managers evaluated the three day
program as outstanding.  We are continuing our commitment to education by offering a BPAA Boot Camp session on Tuesday, December 12th.  This program is FREE for all BCAW members, provided as a benefit of membership!  For more information or to register, click here.

As good as these programs are, however, we know many of you cannot get away from your business to attend . . . or that you have another "day job" that prevents you from participating.  We get that and understand the challenges you face in balancing all of your family & business time commitments.  To that end, BCAW is looking to provide all BCAW member centers unlimited access to the entire catalog of online courses available from BPAA's Bowling University . . . FREE OF CHARGE.

Five of the courses are available "on demand" when you need to on-board new employees.  It is our desire that you have all of your people receive the training necessary for your to be successful.  Topics available "on demand" are:

* Bowling Center Safety Training
* Introduction to Service Standards
* Navigating and Reducing Customer Complaints
* Introduction to Promoting Sales Inside the Center
* Food & Beverage Sales and Service

With BCAW Board approval of the 2018 budget next month, this member benefit will become available to you and all of your team members January 1, 2018 and run for the entire year.

We are currently deep in the planning and budgeting process for next year.  We are excited at the possibilities and look forward to sharing more with you after the BCAW Board Meeting on December 11th.  Until then . . . have a safe and most joyous holiday season with family & friends!

BCAW Celebrates Excellence
With the BCAW Award of Excellence the association honors bowling center owners, proprietors, managers and others who have contributed to bowling in Wisconsin in a significant way over time.  On Monday, October 2, 2017 we celebrated this year's honorees who are great examples of what this award is all about.

Denise Richter & Diane Mallow of Watertown Bowl North in Watertown was recognized for the 12 Lanes and Fewer category.

Dave LaBar of Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley in Ashwaubenon was recognized for the Over 12 Lanes category.

Click here to find out why we honored these nominees.

Congratulations Denise, Diane & Dave!

Nominate someone you feel has contributed to bowling in Wisconsin.  2018 completed submission forms are due to the BCAW office no later than August 31.
BPAA Member Centers Also Have Access to Xtra Frame
As part of the new Go Bowling! PBA Tour umbrella sponsorship package that of
ficially gets underway with the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IX, centers that are members of the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America can sign up for a complimentary Xtra Frame subscription, making PBA's exclusive online bowling channel available to their customers at no cost.

It's easy: All a BPAA-member center has to do is contact PBA's Dave Schroeder , and after confirming membership, Schroeder will provide the participating center with its promotional code and activation instructions in time for dozens of hours of coverage of WSOB IX events.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT
by Bob Maki, Program Manager
    Michael Hoehnen
    Sunset Bowl & Entertainment Center
    Foxx View Lanes
    Waukesha

I was excited to visit with Michael Hoehnen and learn more about his bowling background and his recent purchase of Fox Run Lanes.

Hoehnen worked at Sussex Bowl from 1983-86 and almost became the owner of Sussex Bowl, but a deal fell through.  Then he worked at Sunset Bowl beginning in 1994 and became the owner in 1999. Ironically, Hoehnen almost purchased Foxx View Lanes in the 1990's, but ended up owning Sunset Bowl, which has worked out well.

This fall, Hoehnen purchased Fox Run Lanes and renamed it to its original Foxx View Lanes name and he's been busy ever since putting in long work weeks at both centers.
