HEAD PIN NEWS
Let's Go Bowling!
Greetings from BCAW
by Erik Gialdella, BCAW President
Here we are, Fall of 2020! What strange and unprecedented times we are living in. For many of us, we are not only living in this time...we are owning, managing, and/or working in our bowling centers. We are searching for ways to survive. Some, unfortunately, were not able to survive and more are being faced with the challenging decision to sell or close-up their business. While it's always easy to blame and slander people in power for not doing more to keep businesses open, I challenge you to shift your mindset to what we are so good at. We promote our bowling centers as places for the community and families to enjoy one another's company. As members of the BCAW, we have the ability to come together and help each other thru these challenging times. Or at least, give all we can to someone struggling, someone in desperate need of help. Coming together in unity with one another will not only uplift our association, it will allow us to take back what we are learning from one another and pass it on to our communities. Bowling can do what it always has done, uplift and bring people together...safely. If you want to help make a difference in our members' businesses, are in need of some advice, or just want to see what our members have been doing then you should join us for our Peer2Peer Networking Sessions on every other Tuesday at 10 a.m. or the BCAW Virtual Annual Meeting & Awards, Educational Sessions & Virtual Happy Hour Networking on October 26th. It's a great way to get involved with our fellow members and to pick up some tips and tricks to improve operations, bring more cash flow in, and come together in unity to better our relations and businesses. I hope to see you on a session soon! Hopefully most, if not all, of you were able to start your fall league bowling season. I wish nothing but prosperity and good health this season!
Erik Gialdella

BCAW Scholarships Awarded
The Bowling Centers Association of Wisconsin (BCAW) established the BCAW Scholarship Program in 1995 to provide scholarships to employees of BCAW member bowling centers and their families. As a benefit of membership, BCAW has awarded over $100,000 to students continuing their education beyond high school. In addition to providing four $1,000 scholarships to a current employee and/or immediate family members of a BCAW member bowling center employee, BCAW also awards a $1,000 scholarship to a current USBC youth member bowling in a BCAW member center. BCAW Scholarships are held at SMART and administered by the USBC.
All applicants must be a graduating high school senior or have a post high school diploma or equivalent; and be under the age of 22 as of February 1, 2020. This year's selection committee had a challenging job selecting just five award winners for the 2020 BCAW Scholarships. $1,000 Katelyn Holz, Super Bowl $1,000 Collin Krachey, Prairie Lanes $1,000 Tyler VanLanen, The Ashwaubenon Bowling Alley $1,000 Zachary Brzeczkowski, Village Lanes Green Bay $1,000 Isaac Albaugh, Tower Junction

In 2016 BCAW created the "BCAW Award of Excellence" to recognize contributions to BCAW and bowling throughout Wisconsin. Those honored are selected annually from nominations submitted to BCAW for consideration. The nine-point criteria for this award focuses on demonstrated results in helping to grow bowling not only in their center but in their community and the state. Supporting the BCAW and its programs through engaged participation will be a hallmark of recipients.
BCAW is committed to recognizing outstanding contributions to the bowling industry in Wisconsin with equal opportunity for this award without regard to the size of the bowling center they are affiliated with. To that end, the goal is to have two "BCAW Award of Excellence" honorees each year based on center size; 12 lanes and fewer and over 12 lanes.

BCAW Peer2Peer Networking Meetings

This summer BCAW began utilizing ZOOM to provide additional opportunities for proprietors & managers to network on topics of interest. Designed to be informative between peers, we've had the first few without much of a structure on specific topics or speakers. We are looking to create meaningful discussion on subjects our members are interested in.
On October 6th, we will be offering " Eliminating Your Top Pinsetter Problems" facilitated by Pete Riopelle (proprietor Village Bowl) and Jim Everett (head mechanic Village Bowl). This session will feature a short video presentation, followed by an interactive Q&A.
