Bowling pins falling down from a strike in ten-pin bowling.
Let's Go Bowling!
Where Did Four Years Go?
by Steve Cieslewicz, BCAW President
As I sit here and write my final article as your BCAW President, I sit back and reflect on the past four years. Where did it go?  Looking back on the previous four years I think to myself, we accomplished a ton of work in four years. My primary goal was to increase membership. Not by one or two centers, but to grow membership by 10% the first two years and then by another 10% the next two years. If my memory serves me correctly, I believe we had roughly 54% of all bowling centers in membership four years ago.

Well, with a new executive director and new president on the loose, it was off to the races. We wanted to implement this and implement that. Start this, move that. Then all of a sudden, right in the middle of everything, you throw in this one simple word that kind of got us in some hot water. That word is . . . change.  "Hey that's the way we have always done it or what are you trying to do around here?"

Change can be good if done in small amounts.  Too much too soon is kind of a recipe for disaster. I can honestly say that coming into this position I wanted to take the ball and run with it.  But in the end, I found out that it takes time to do the things we wanted to accomplish. Four years later our membership has grown to over 70%; up from 167 member bowling centers to 211 as of today (September 11, 2018).

That is a great feeling to see those numbers. Lots of stories and thank you's from our fellow proprietors.  Great job done by our executive director Yvonne and her staff along the way.  I have learned sooo much from the whole BCAW staff and the board of directors. It sure has been one heck of a roller coaster ride.

While policies and procedures have changed, tournaments have come and gone, members and proprietors have come and a few have left, and staff has evolved  -- but the main focus has never changed. To enhance the profitability of our member centers. I have met so many great new people along the way and I am deeply honored to have served as your president the last 4 years.

Bowling is in my blood, as it is for most of you. But now it is time for the next president to set their sights on what is important and help in their own way. It sure would be nice to see most of you at our BCAW Annual Meeting, Celebration of Excellence Luncheon and Trade Show on October 1st at 10:30 am at the Kalahari Resort in Wisconsin Dells to share some stories.  Click here to register.

In conclusion, I just want to say thank you!  The BCAW & BPAA have been the best organizations I have ever been affiliated with and cannot wait to see what the future holds.
