The Cargo Not Taken: How Licella and Shell Are Unlocking Stranded Feedstocks

New technologies are transforming low-value forestry residues and mixed waste plastics into renewable fuels, with Licella’s Cat-HTR process converting wet feedstocks into stable biocrude without energy-intensive drying. Projects like Arbios Biotech in Prince George, demonstrate how wood residues can be turned into a tradable fuel, while advances in refining capabilities are enabling the upgrading of these more complex feedstocks. Together, these developments are aligning feedstock, technology, and refining systems to unlock previously stranded materials and expand renewable fuel pathways.

Canada’s Clean Fuels Market: 2025 Clarified the Framework, 2026 Tests It

In 2025, Canadian policymakers made targeted adjustments to the Clean Fuel Regulations that clarified credit creation, verification, and reporting, helping reduce uncertainty for market participants. Rather than expanding ambition, the focus remained on improving regulatory clarity and consistency, alongside introducing measures such as a temporary biofuel production incentive and maintaining industrial carbon pricing through the Output-Based Pricing System. As Canada moved into 2026, attention shifted to how predictable and durable the system would be for cross-border producers, with execution, integration, and long-term investment confidence emerging as key tests.

Delta Air Lines Softens SAF Targets Amid Policy Uncertainty

Delta Air Lines scaled back its sustainable aviation fuel targets, shifting its previous goals of reaching 10% SAF use by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2050 to aspirational status. The move reflected slower industry uptake linked to a lack of consistent policy support, particularly following a change in U.S. administration priorities. Despite this adjustment, the company continued to view SAF as a critical pathway for reducing aviation emissions.

SUBLIME Energie Launched On-Farm Biogas Liquefaction System

SUBLIME Energie launched “Charlie,” the world’s first system capable of liquefying biogas directly on farms, at a site in Brittany, France. The technology enabled on-farm anaerobic digestion to produce renewable fuel without relying on gas grid infrastructure by increasing biogas energy density for transport to centralized hubs. The system processed approximately 180 tonnes of bioLNG and 330 tonnes of liquid bioCO₂ annually, supporting decentralized renewable energy production while creating new revenue opportunities for farmers. The company planned further deployment across France and Europe.

Microsoft Pauses New Carbon Removal Purchases Amid Market Uncertainty

Microsoft paused new carbon removal purchasing agreements following a recent deal for 620,000 tonnes of carbon removal from an Indigenous-owned project in Saskatchewan. The decision, described as part of a portfolio review, created uncertainty across the carbon dioxide removal market, where Microsoft accounted for 90% of all durable contracted volume in 2025. With many developers relying on Microsoft as a primary buyer, the pause highlighted the need for more diversified demand as the market adjusted to shifting investment and policy dynamics.

Strait of Hormuz Disruptions Highlight Opportunities for Bioenergy

Disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz highlighted the vulnerability of global energy and fertilizer supply chains, with the route handling a significant share of oil, LNG, and fertilizer exports from the Middle East. Limited pipeline alternatives and rising transport constraints also posed risks to global markets, including higher fertilizer costs and downstream impacts on agriculture and food prices. The situation pointed to emerging opportunities for the bioenergy sector, particularly in waste-to-energy and nutrient recycling, as countries sought to strengthen domestic supply, reduce import dependence, and enhance energy security.
