Avian Influenza (HPAI) Important Update

The Fraser Valley is now fully in security zones as of January 26, 2024.

  • No more specific permits are needed for movements and only general permits are required. The exception is for infected premises who will be placing chicks – please work with your liaison officer to ensure you have the correct permit.
  • There is no more regular 2X weekly Dead Bird Surveillance (DBS)
  • CFIA is currently carrying out post-outbreak surveillance in several Primary Control Zones. This mandatory surveillance is a key step in the process to revoking a PCZ so that movement permits and related testing is no longer required for the affected premises. It is very important you still participate in this mandatory surveillance.
  • CFIA will contact you directly by telephone if your farm is required to participate in the surveillance testing. As there are CFIA staff from other provinces assisting with the response, the incoming call may show in caller ID as an unknown number or an out of province number.

Your cooperation is essential in the successful completion of this surveillance so please be aware of the following:

  • 10 samples per premises are required.
  • You can provide dead birds or request live bird sampling.
  • Provide your dead bin or be available for live bird testing on the dates confirmed with CFIA so that the available inspection capacity is effectively used and unnecessary delays in revoking PCZs are avoided.

Post-outbreak surveillance will be starting in several more PCZs this week and we urge you to meet the sampling requirements for the benefit of your fellow producers and the entire poultry sector.

Thank you to everyone in the industry who has worked tirelessly to keep the industry running through this event.

HPAI C&D Insurance Options

The Board has learned that some growers have access to certain amounts of C&D insurance related to HPAI through their insurance provider.

Some insurance providers may have this product while others do not.

Growers are encouraged to discuss with their insurance providers whether you are currently covered or could be and plan for the unforeseen expense.

Further, the Board is reviewing whether other industry wide options are available

and will report to industry once we learn more.
