Introducing the 2024 BC & Yukon Outstanding Young Farmers

Tristan and Aubyn Banwell, along with their children Twain and Tusi, are at the helm of Spray Creek Ranch, a flourishing regenerative organic farm nestled near Lillooet, BC.

Their partnership with landowners and dedicated team enables them to steward a variety of livestock on vast pastures along the majestic Fraser River. The presence of an on-farm abattoir allows them to proudly distribute organic meats directly to consumers in the Sea-to-Sky region, fostering valuable connections.

Since 2014, Spray Creek Ranch has converted 500 acres to organic certification and actively participates in BC's organic farming community.

The Banwell family advocates for regenerative agriculture's transformative power, recognizing its global impact, the unifying nature of food, and the consumer's pivotal role in shaping sustainable farming.

A heartfelt congratulations to the Banwell family for their remarkable accomplishments!

Additionally, we are truly impressed by the remarkable achievements of the other nominees,

Jeff and Carrie Hooge of Hooge Farms in Greendale, BC,

and Kerry McCann of Laughing Crow Organics in Pemberton, BC.

It is inspiring to see such dedication and innovation in the agricultural industry, and we are proud to recognize and celebrate their contributions.

Category III Reduction

Building on the elimination of the preventive use of Category I and II,

CFC is now focusing on a non-regulatory approach to further reducing antimicrobial use, with specific attention on reducing the preventive use of Category III antimicrobials.

The membership of the Category III Focus Group has been finalized

and planning for the first meeting in April is taking place.

Reports from the Focus Group will be reviewed by the

CFC Production Committee.

New Entrant Program Consultation Update

The BCCMB is nearing the end of its three-month consultation process to support the development of a revised New Entrant Grower Program.

The Board wants to thank everyone who participated and provided valuable input through the online survey. We had 101 participants, mostly established chicken growers (42%), but also a wide range of other allied tradespeople, aspiring new entrants and some public participation.

These summary (anonymized) results will be considered by the

New Entrant Program Committee and the Board before the decisions are made for the new program.

(We have postponed the gift card draw for those who entered until the end of April).

The consultation remains open for e-mailed comments until April 30, 2024.

2021 and 2022 Surplus Distribution

As announced at the Chicken Board 2023 AGM, on March 7, 2024 the Board agreed to the distribution of surplus funds from the 2021 and 2022 year.

Eligible growers in good standing with the Board will be distributed surplus funds based on the proportion of levy paid by a grower in the given year of surplus.

Total distribution is $662,102 (2021) and $832,855 (2022),

for a total surplus distribution of $1,494,957.

Stay tuned over the coming months while staff verify information and the distribution is prepared.

The Board distributes a surplus to growers based upon the total surplus calculated as select current assets less select current liabilities and deferred revenue at year-end less one month's budgeted operating expenses.

The Board reserves its discretion to distribute any or all of the calculated surplus as per Part 15 of the General Orders.

Growers are encouraged to read Part 15 of the General Orders if they require any further information on the Surplus Distribution policy.
