FEDERAL FLOOD FUNDS DENIED

The cities of Abbotsford, Merritt, and Princeton have recently been denied flood mitigation funding, a decision that poses serious challenges for our communities as we work to protect against future flood risks.

For a detailed account of the situation and its implications, please read the full article on the City of Abbotsford's website:

No Flood Mitigation Funding for Abbotsford, Merritt, and Princeton.

BARN ENTRY IN FOUR EASY STEPS

A physical bench at the barn entry is a best practice and a demonstrated way to improve biosecurity compliance.

The physical barrier should be:

Flush to the ground to prevent air movement across from one side to the other, and touching the wall on both sides to prevent people from simply walking around the barrier.

Watch a quick video that shows the steps for entering the barn to eliminate cross contamination provided by the

MESSAGE FROM THE BC CHIEF VETERINARIAN

Effective June 5, 2024, the Chief Veterinarian has removed

General Order AIV 2023-03 (PDF, 246 KB).

This order required all persons responsible for chickens and turkeys in operations regulated by the BC Broiler Hatching Egg Commission, BC Chicken Marketing Board, BC Egg Marketing Board, and BC Turkey Marketing Board, and who hold quota from their Marketing Board or Commission to keep their poultry indoors.

Diligence in applying biosecurity measures remains the most important tool in preventing poultry flocks from contracting avian influenza.

It is essential that producers continue to maintain on-farm biosecurity at all times, even after the lifting of the order.

Bird owners are legally responsible to notify authorities of serious bird diseases such as bird flu. Do not take sick birds off the property.

If you suspect birds you own have AI:

  • Call your veterinarian
  • Contact your nearest Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) Animal Health office
  • Call the BC Animal Health Centre at 1-800-661-9903

More information on AI can be found here:

AVIAN METAPNUEMOVIRUS (aMPV)

NEW CASES IN CANADA AND THE US

Several turkey flocks in Ontario and Manitoba have recently been detected with aMPV subtypes A and B, with at least one flock experiencing high mortality. In recent months, multiple states throughout the USA have documented increased cases of aMPV subtypes A and B with significant economic losses, affecting broilers, broiler breeders, layers, cage free organic birds and turkeys.
