BCCMB NEW BOARD MEMBER

Dale Krahn has been elected to the

BC Chicken Marketing Board to serve as a grower elected Director, as announced at the AGM on March 8, 2024.

We are proud to highlight Dale's remarkable journey in the chicken farming industry. Since 2003, Dale has been dedicated to farming broilers in Abbotsford, BC. His commitment extends beyond his farm as he has served on the BC Chicken Grower’s Association for 14 years, with 8 of those years as President. Dale's leadership shone through as the Emergency Operations Centre Director during the 2022/2023 Avian Influenza event, showcasing his dedication to the industry's well-being.

Dale's family's farming legacy dates to the early 60s when his grandfather, father, and uncle started with a single barn of turkeys. Over the years, with the collective effort of the family, the business expanded to include broilers, pullets, layers, and even a feed mill. Dale's passion for both the hands-on farming aspect and the strategic business management side is evident in his involvement at the board level, where he represents farmers and advocates to produce high-quality products for consumers.

Dale firmly believes in the importance of collaboration within the value chain. He emphasizes the responsibility of broiler farmers to ensure the production of the best quality products. By working closely with value chain partners, Dale envisions a future where everyone in the chain can thrive and contribute to the success of the industry. Dale's dedication, expertise, and vision make him an asset to the chicken farming community, and we celebrate his contributions to the industry.

Welcome to the BC Chicken Marketing Board Dale!

As announced at the Chicken Board 2023 AGM, on March 7, 2024 the Board agreed to the distribution of surplus funds from the 2021 and 2022 year.

Eligible growers in good standing with the Board will be distributed surplus funds based on the proportion of levy paid by a grower in the given year of surplus.

Total distribution is $662,102 (2021) and $832,855 (2022),

for a total surplus distribution of $1,494,957.

Stay tuned over the coming months while staff verify information and the distribution is prepared.

The Board distributes a surplus to growers based upon the total surplus calculated as select current assets less select current liabilities and deferred revenue at year-end less one month's budgeted operating expenses.

The Board reserves its discretion to distribute any or all of the calculated surplus as per Part 15 of the General Orders.

Growers are encouraged to read Part 15 of the General Orders if they require any further information on the Surplus Distribution policy.

Youth Employment and Skills Program

Quick facts

The YESP is part of the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy (YESS), an Employment and Social Development Canada-led initiative involving 12 federal departments and agencies.

YESS is part of the Government of Canada's commitment to help young people, particularly those facing barriers to employment, get the information and gain the skills, work experience and abilities they need to make a successful transition into the labour market.

Since the YESP began, approximately 5,100 youth have been employed in agricultural-related organizations from every province and territory. There have also been nearly 1,500 youth facing barriers employed through the program since its inception in 2019.

Employers can apply between February 26, 2024 and March 25, 2024 for their project to be considered. Applications from Indigenous employers will be prioritized for the 2024-2025 program year.

Application forms for the YESP are available through the webpage.

HPAI C&D Insurance Options

The Board has learned that some growers have access to certain amounts of C&D insurance related to HPAI through their insurance provider.

Some insurance providers may have this product while others do not.

Growers are encouraged to discuss with their insurance providers whether you are currently covered or could be and plan for the unforeseen expense.
