Cobb Avian Influenza Tech Focus

We are pleased to share a recently published document by Cobb that provides a comprehensive overview of avian influenza, covering aspects such as the disease's description, history, biosecurity measures, vaccination information, and its impact on international trade. It is crucial for all growers and industry representatives to remain vigilant and prioritize reviewing and enhancing biosecurity practices on their farms. This emphasis on biosecurity is key in safeguarding the poultry industry against avian influenza outbreaks.

Talk, Ask, Listen

CFC is hosting a half-day, virtual mental health workshop on June 14, facilitated by the Do More Ag Foundation.

The workshop is called “Talk, Ask, Listen” and is open to farmers and provincial board staff to register. Part of the workshop will be interactive so to ensure a good experience for everyone, registration is limited to 200 people and it will not be recorded.

If there is lots of interest and good feedback from this session, we will look to hosting more in the future. Simultaneous translation will be available on the meeting.

The slides will be presented in both English and French, and the workbook will be provided in both languages as well.

BC Raising Drought Concerns

The province is raising concern BC may again be in drought this spring and summer, as snowpacks are at a record low of just 63 per cent of normal. In a statement Water, Land, and Resource Stewardship Minister Nathan Cullen says last summer’s drought fuelled BC’s worst-ever wildfire season and impacted farmers and ranchers. The minister points to actions the province is taking to help communities, farmers and industry prepare, including the $100 million Watershed Security Fund.

New Entrant Consultation

The Board thanks everyone for their participation in the

New Entrant Consultation

As of May 1, 2024, the BC Chicken Marketing Board (BCCMB) completed its three-month New Entrant Grower (NEG) Program

public consultation, which will support the development

of a revised NEG program.

The consultation part of the policy development

process is now complete.

Through an online survey in February 2024, 101 people provided input to the Board. Participants were mostly established chicken growers (42%), but also a wide range of other allied tradespeople, aspiring new entrants and some public participation.

The Board also encouraged input via the website/email

and a few folks made in-person visits to the Chicken Board office.

A random draw was conducted by Della Oberhoffner, the Independent Elections Officer for BC Council of Marketing Boards, on April 12th for a $200 restaurant gift card for those who participated in the survey.

Grower Klaas Korthius of Homeland Farms Ltd. in Chilliwack was the lucky winner. Congratulations, Klaas!

The Board will review policy options and recommendations before a policy decision is made and a new program is announced,

expected later this year.

More information about the consultation process and timeline is available via the

BC Chicken Marketing Board website: link here
