BC's Construction Health & Safety Association
Leaping into February

February happens to fall on a leap year in 2024, giving us all a bonus day to get things done before the end of the month — with so many construction projects on the go, it looks like contractors can use it.

If you haven’t already checked out the new BCCSA website, we invite you to take a look. It’s been redesigned from top to bottom to make the site easier to navigate, easier to read, and easier to search. In addition, you’ll find a lot of new multimedia content. We believe the new design helps achieve our mandate of making safety simpler. Tell us what you think!

It’s been one month since the January 1, 2024 deadline for certification of asbestos abatement workers and concrete pump operators so that they can remain compliant with current regulations. If workers haven’t yet been certified, they should register as soon as possible to minimize disruption to employment and work schedules. Asbestos workers can apply for certification under the BCCSA’s Asbestos Control Training program. Concrete pump operators can register for Certified Concrete Pump Operator (CCPO) certification at www.ccpo.ca.

The BCCSA is also excited to announce a new mental health training program designed to support employers looking for resources to address workplace mental health needs. Designed for construction supervisors and managers, the training program will consist of an online course and an in-person workshop available at various locations for groups as large as 24 participants. We anticipate a high demand for this program, which will be available on a first come, first served basis.

Is your Traffic Control Person (TCP) record of completion set to expire? If so, we invite TCPs to consider renewing online using BCCSA’s new 1-Day TCP Online Renewal Course. It’s a convenient way to maintain your certification through e-learning.

Finally, in this issue BCCSA Regional Safety Advisor Tanya Steele shares her top tips for presenting successful toolbox talks.

Five toolbox talk tips you can use today with Tanya Steele, RSA Lower Mainland
We’re not always comfortable speaking in front of an audience, and delivering a toolbox talk is no different. Tanya Steele, BCCSA Regional Safety Advisor for the Lower Mainland, offers five tips you can use today to make your toolbox talk presentations more effective:

1. Be prepared.
Plan your toolbox talk — never “wing it.” A toolbox talk is a training session that requires you to structure a beginning, middle and end and identify learning outcomes. If your toolbox talk requires props, learning aids, or equipment, such as such as screens, power cords, pens, clipboards, or an app to be downloaded, prepare everything in advance. Consider a practice run before you present, to ensure that the presentation flows logically and smoothly. See more

Asbestos Worker Certification
As of January 1, 2024...If you work with asbestos in construction, this new certification program provides a path to a safer future.

The BC government has recently unveiled a requirement for mandatory certification of all asbestos abatement workers and those who are likely to come into contact with asbestos as part of their work in the BC construction industry. It’s the first certification of its kind in Canada and aims to safeguard construction workers and ensure their well-being. Learn More
