BC's Construction Health & Safety Association
Just three short months until January 1, 2024

For months, we’ve been reminding the BC construction sector about the significance of January 1, 2024 — how there’s still time to get your certification as an asbestos worker, register as an asbestos abatement contractor, and earn your Certified Concrete Pump Operator (CCPO) certification. The good news is that there’s still time, but that time is rapidly dwindling.

Concrete pump operators in BC can be certified by completing BCCSA Certified Concrete Pump Operator (CCPO) program. For more information and to register, please visit the CCPO website at www.ccpo.ca.

Asbestos abatement workers, or construction workers who are likely to be exposed to asbestos, must be certified to continue working in those environments. Workers can register an account in BCCSA’s online learning portal to complete training for Level 1 or Level 2 Certification, and book a Level 2 skills assessment and a final certification exam. Visit the BCCSA Asbestos Control Training (ACT) web page for more information.

If you’re an asbestos abatement contractor, you must be licensed by WorkSafeBC by January 1, 2024. You can apply to WorkSafeBC right now.

If you’re a seasoned asbestos abatement expert and want to use your experience to evaluate asbestos workers’ safety skills, consider applying for an Assessor position with the BCCSA here.
We’d also like to highlight our rapidly-approaching annual BC Construction Health and Safety Conference scheduled for October 19th and 20th at the Pinnacle Harbourfront Hotel, Vancouver. The high-energy program focuses on promoting safety, building leadership skills and achieving success. Visit the sold-out trade show and don’t forget to collect your 4.0 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points offered by BC Housing Licensing and Consumer Services after you attend the conference. Register here today.

As always, we welcome your feedback!
Meet new Vancouver Island RSA:
Elyse Taylor
Elyse Taylor is the BCCSA’s newest Regional Safety Advisor (RSA), joining in August as the representative for Vancouver Island.

Her commitment to health and safety goes back to her late teens and her early employment as an oilfield medic.

“I got my Occupational First Aid Level 3 certification and someone in my class told me that there was plenty of work in the oil patch, so I got on a Greyhound Bus and went up to Fort St. John from Vancouver Island,” she recalls. “I worked for four years on drilling rigs and lease road construction through northern BC, Alberta and the Northwest Territories.”

Secure your future in Asbestos Work!

Ready to take your career to the next level? Per new provincial regulation, all asbestos workers and workers who may come into contact with asbestos must be certified by January 1, 2024. The BCCSA is now offering the Level 2 practical skills assessment and the WSBC Level 2 certification exam required for certification.

To qualify for the Level 2 practical assessment, ensure you've successfully completed both Level 1 and Level 2 training courses. Don't worry if you haven't completed them yet; there's still time!
