BC's Construction Health & Safety Association
Welcome to February as construction activity, BCCSA announcements ramp up

We begin to receive more daily sunlight the day after winter solstice, but by the beginning of February it’s easy to appreciate that the sun feels warmer and the days are becoming noticeably longer. It’s a good thing too, considering the way construction activity is ramping up — every minute of additional daylight is a bonus.

We’re preparing for a busy month at the BCCSA as well, and we’re particularly excited about two new developments.

In this issue, read about the growing interest from parties across North America in the BCCSA’s Certified Concrete Pump Operator (CCPO) program. As the first and most rigorous standard of its kind, the BC construction industry is setting the pace for other jurisdictions looking to make concrete pumping safer.

Also, later this month, we’ll be announcing an event and discuss some surprising preliminary findings from Blueprint for Action. It’s a joint research effort by the BCCSA and the Centre for Applied Research in Mental Health and Addiction at Simon Fraser University (SFU), supported by our Research, Development and Opportunity fund. The goal of the study, headed by SFU’s Dr. Julian Somers, is to understand the impact of alcohol and other drugs on construction workers in British Columbia, and to provide evidence-based programs and training to best target substance use disorders.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the more than 600 construction workers who completed surveys to help us collect valuable data. Your participation was essential to this research. Look for an announcement regarding the date of the Blueprint for Action event, which will be held in Vancouver.

As always, we welcome your feedback!
Canadian Concrete Expo 2023
The BCCSA is returning to the Canadian Concrete Expo February 16 & 17, 2023! We'll be presenting Certified Concrete Pump Operator (CCPO) Program the morning of February 16 #CCE2023

(Pre-registration required)
Interest in Certified Concrete Pump Operator program booming beyond BC's borders
As BC approaches a regulatory requirement for all concrete pump operators to be certified by January 1, 2024, it’s important to remember that forward-thinking employers in the province have been long-time supporters of the BCCSA program. To date, 104 certifications have been issued already.

The Alliance is carrying that message to the Canadian Concrete Expo in Toronto, February 16 and 17, as both an exhibitor and presenter.

“The construction industry responded enthusiastically in BC, long before legislation was scheduled to make certification mandatory,” says Ammar Kavazovic, Director, Programs and Initiatives with the BCCSA. “We’re letting the broader concrete industry know that they can move forward first with options to make concrete pump operation safer.”

Kavazovic notes that the program, which assesses competency by combining a test of theoretical knowledge with a practical exam, is the first of its kind in North America and can be easily deployed in any jurisdiction. BCCSA staff have already met with Concrete Alberta regarding a potential CCPO pilot in that province and other jurisdictions have expressed interest as well.

“The program was designed to be plug and play, because the principles involved are universal” Kavazovic says. “What’s worked so well with construction industry support in BC can be applied anywhere.”

For anyone attending the Canadian Concrete Expo, the BCCSA will be making a presentation on the CCPO program on Thursday, February 16 at 10:45 am in Pegasus Room A. You can also meet the BCCSA team in person at Booth #15117
