Inaugural Brent Henley Youth

Leadership Class Graduates

BHYLP Class Graduation Ceremony Held At Rock-n'-Bowl de Lafayette in April

The Brent Henley Youth Leadership Program (BHYLP) inaugural class graduated on Monday, April 24, 2023, at Rock-n'-Bowl de Lafayette after a 9-month curriculum on topics, such as emergency response, healthcare, education, environmental issues, arts & culture, economic development, retail and industry, and state and local government. The program's thirty (30) Lafayette Parish High School juniors not only learned about these topics but were also able to meet face-to-face with local

leaders who work in these various fields and the students were provided first-hand knowledge of how each of these areas impact our local communities.

"This leadership program is a serious, in-depth look at how our community functions.", said program Chairman Jerry Lynn, "But these promising future leaders are, in fact, teenagers so we encouraged them to have some fun after the graduation ceremony by celebrating with refreshments and a few games of bowling with family and friends."

Many of the program sponsors were also on hand for the graduation and were able to interact with the new graduates. BHYLP graduate Mia Stelly had this to say about her experience, “Engaging with various leaders in Acadiana has allowed me to realize that every career requires a team of passionate adults and volunteers to be successful. I hope to one day become a future leader in my community and use my passion to make a positive difference in Acadiana.” Another graduate, Mya Arceneaux, said, “I have full confidence that this program has given me knowledge and experiences that will prepare me for the future.”

Having completed BHLYP, these first-time program graduates will have the opportunity to be placed in an ex-officio (non-voting) capacity on a participating, local, non-profit board to further their civic leadership experience during their senior year of high school.

Congratulations To Our 2023 BHYLP Graduates!

Thank You 2022-2023 BHYLP Sponsors!

Lemonade Day Acadiana

Saturday, July 22nd

The Broussard Chamber Foundation’s 2nd annual Lemonade Day Acadiana event is happening Saturday, July 22nd. Lemonade Day is a free, fun, experiential learning program that teaches youth how to start, own, and operate their own business - a lemonade stand.

The foremost objective of Lemonade Day is to empower youth to take ownership of their lives and become future productive members of society. Each child who registers receives access to the Lemonade Day curriculum that teaches them lessons like creating budgets, setting profit-making goals, serving customers, repaying investors, and giving back to the community. Along the way, they acquire skills in goal setting, problem solving, and gain self-esteem critical for future success. They keep all the money they make and are encouraged to spend some, save some, and share some.

For our first Lemonade Day Acadiana held last year, there were 59 kids from around Acadiana who registered through the website, with some of the registrants being from as far away as Alexandria, Louisiana. The event was so successful that our event chairwoman and organizer, Natasha Bryan, was recognized at a National Lemonade Day Conference for having “The Best City Engagement”.

Lemonade Day is a national organization based in Houston, Texas and currently serves 90 communities in 3 different countries. The program has served more than 1.5 million kids to date and has generated $270 million in profit, which is kept by the participating children.

While it’s free for the children to participate, the program relies on sponsors and donations to fund the event. Funds are used for the cost of curriculum materials and for assisting with start-up costs for the children’s new businesses. Any remaining funds are held for future Lemonade Day Acadiana events. We also need volunteers to help facilitate the event, mentor the kids, and to help distribute program materials to area schools.
