Dear Hotel Community,
T
hank you to all of you who filled out the survey for our July 5 Pulse Check. You will find a number of key insights outlined below.
Your answers and your voice is how we detail the current state of our industry to Government in our advocacy efforts. Your answers also tell us what is important to you, so we can ensure we are working on the right things on your behalf.
This pulse check offered a sobering look at the state of the accommodation sector now and into the foreseeable future. And with Wednesday's announcement that Canada has reached a $343B deficit, continuing to spotlight the devastation that COVID-19 has had on our industry, in order to support each of you and your employees, remains of critical importance.
In the survey some of you outlined that CERB payments have made recalling employees increasingly difficult. Labour issues and the employee-employer relationship will continue to take centre-stage in conversations surrounding recovery, especially as the temporary layoff provision deadline draws near. Ultimately, we need BC tourism and our economy at large to recover, and our phones to ring to rediscover a much-desired sense of normalcy across our industry. We are focused on economic recovery which will take consumer confidence, clear messaging and travel demand. We strive to reach a place where employers have sufficient staff who feel protected and secure in their positions. We also aim to reach a place where the employee-employer relationship is fostered once again.
I will leave you with a quote from our member Marion Harper Treskin and - to echo her sentiments - a promise that we will do everything in our power to bring business levels back up and restore our industry to better than it was before.
"We cannot recall associates back because our business levels have dropped off significantly. It breaks my heart to operate on limited staffing levels when I know fully well that ALL of our associates are the reason for our hotel’s success. I will do everything in my power to continue to work on bringing them all back one day."
