Hotel Industry Update

Dear Hotel Community,  We are celebrating another win this week as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced yesterday that the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) will be extended until December 2020 . Following our recent pulse check, almost 50% of you outlined that you were unsure if you would be able to recall your staff. With this announcement, we hope this subsidy will offer assistance, allowing accommodators to continue employing their staff and reinstate additional team members as occupancy levels rise. Through this, we also remain cognizant of the impacts that CERB has had in recalling employees and the need to action this growing concern. In addition, it was also announced today that the Canada-U.S. border will remain closed to all non-essential travel until at least August 21st. We will continue to monitor what this means for each of you and action change in order to support your needs. CEWS Extension Announced

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced yesterday the extension of the emergency wage subsidy program to December of this year. The program covers 75 per cent of wages for workers at eligible companies and non-profits who have been affected by the economic slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The wage subsidy plan has been put in place to help Canadians get back to work following the COVID-19 pandemic and to support businesses as we start the economy. Read more here

Canada & U.S. Border to Stay Closed

Canadian and U.S. officials have announced their decision to keep the border between the two countries closed to non-essential travel until at least August 21. Government has stated they will continue to keep it an ongoing conversation but will continue to keep Canadians safe as the confirmed cases in the U.S. continues to rise. The ban on discretionary travel was first introduced in March and has been extended each month since. The latest extension was set to expire on July 21. Read more here

BCHA Launches New Resource Recovery Guide

The BC Hotel Association announced last week the launch of the BCHA Resource Guide to aid in recovery.   The Guide includes both products and services that are particular to the changed environment as well as items that are typical of supply need or considerations for upkeep and improvement. This will also include any promotions or special opportunities which we have curated on your behalf.
