Dear Hotel Community,
We thank you for your continued participation in our pulse check surveys - this information is critical for us to maintain a current understanding of the ongoing impact to our industry due to COVID-19, and to ensure we are advocating for the right issues with Government.
Here are the results:
- Avg size of property 100 rooms
- 65% independent
- 35% brand
- 34% of respondents are closed
- 62% operating at reduced hours/staffing
- 64,700 people laid off
Relief measures needed in priority:
- Property Tax relief
- Increased Wage Subsidy
- Business Tax relief
- Securing liquidity
- Insurance support
- Defer minimum wage increase
We're pleased to see the continued relief measures and government announcements as a result of our almost daily meetings and communications, locally, provincially, and nationally, but we still have a lot of work to do to ensure our industry survives and is ready to rebound when the time is right. It is important now to understand how successful you are in actually receiving the relief measures which are now available. If you are having difficulty, please let us know.
As always, do not hesitate to reach out if you have questions related to our efforts, or if we can offer you any support needed.
Wishing you all the best.

COVID-19: Join HAC for a Live Q&A With Employment Lawyers Tomorrow
|
|
In preparation for the launch of the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) program on Monday, April 27, 2020, the Hotel Association of Canada understands that members may have a lot of questions about how the process will work and how to apply. They also recognize that many members don’t have access to legal counsel.
To support members through this process, HAC has hired a team of employment lawyers through Miller Thomson LLP, who will be able to field member questions tomorrow via online digital chat.
In anticipation of the volume of questions, they are using a platform called Slido which will allow members to type in a question and also vote on popular questions in order to ensure that they can cover the most important and relevant questions during the hour time slot.
Questions will be answered live on zoom by our lawyers.
You can start adding your questions to Slido immediately (details below) and vote on the best questions in advance of the session.
This partnership with Miller Thomson will allow HAC to offer a session in both French and English. Note that the French session is not only offered in French, but it accounts for Quebec employment law which is different than the rest of Canada.

What the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy
Means for Employers
|
|
On April 11, 2020, Bill C-14, the COVID-19 Emergency Response Act, No. 2 received Royal Assent. It enacts the new Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy to help employers keep and return workers to their payroll through the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Like you, many Canadian employers are still searching for clarity to questions regarding eligibility, compliance and as well as how this new wage subsidy interacts with the 10 per cent Temporary Wage Subsidy and the EI Work Sharing program.
Watch this webinar as Stuart Ducoffe, HR and Employment Lawyer and Founder of e2r® discusses several employment law considerations related to the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy.
The webinar covers:
- Who is a qualifying employer?
- What are the claim periods?
- Are employers eligible for the CEWS for all employees?
- Interaction with 10 percent Temporary Wage Subsidy and Work Sharing Program
