Tourism Task Force Report Update
Tourism Task Force | Update on progress and final report

Since our appointment in September, the Tourism Task Force has been working diligently to deliver our final report to the B.C. government. And I am pleased to say that yesterday we delivered our final report to the Honourable Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport—well ahead of our December 31 commitment. The immediacy with which we delivered our recommendations reflects the urgency and anxiety felt by workers and businesses across B.C. about the impact of COVID-19.

I hope you will take time to review the final recommendations, which reflect the need to urgently address immediate needs for support with a longer plan of action to ensure our diverse tourism sector is poised for recovery and growth in the future.
Over the past several weeks, task force members travelled (virtually) across the province to meet with small and large operators, Indigenous peoples, community leaders, labour representatives, sector association leaders, and tourism industry experts. On behalf of the Tourism Task Force, I thank everyone who took the time to provide us with honest and thoughtful feedback during these challenging times.

The B.C. government is now taking the time to consider our findings and review our recommendations. I expect we will have further conversations with the Honourable Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport in the weeks ahead. I look forward to sharing more information about how we will be working together to support the industry now and in the future.

Sincerely,

Tamara Vrooman, O.B.C. (she/her/hers)
President and CEO, Vancouver International Airport
Chair, Tourism Task Force
Ministry of Labour Reminder - Employer Registry Temporary Foreign Worker Protection Act
Over the past six months many of you provided thoughtful input and helpful feedback as we developed the new online registration process for employers – thank you for your assistance! As you know, on September 18, 2020, the Employer Registry was launched to better protect foreign workers in BC. Employers were provided with a 90-day coming into force date to ensure plenty of time for employers to participate in an overview of the new registry and to complete registration. To date more than 900 employers have successfully completed the new registration process and the online searchable Employer Registry may be reached here: https://services.labour.gov.bc.ca/TFWRegistrationSearch

This note is to remind you that effective December 15, 2020, some employers will be required to hold a Certificate of Registration before they can recruit a foreign national for employment. The registration requirement applies to employers if they:
  • Require a Labour Market Impact Assessment from the federal government; or,
  • Hire through the federal Home Child-Care Provider or Home Support Worker Pilot Programs.

There is no fee to obtain a Certificate of Registration; this registry is an important step to ensure foreign workers are protected while working in BC, and fully implements the Temporary Foreign Worker Protection Act.

Greater Vancouver Board of Trade - Business Reinvention Awards
The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade’s Scale-up Centre for SMEs (SCS) is pleased to announce the 2021 Business Reinvention Awards.

The purpose of these new awards is to recognize businesses who have reinvented, adapted, and shown resiliency in the face of all challenges and barriers in 2020.

It’s undeniable that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought about some very difficult times to us all, but it has also shown us how businesses are able to get creative and reinvent themselves in order to adapt to the situation and not only survive, but also thrive in the face of adversity. This is what the Business Reinvention Awards 2021 is all about! We want to recognize businesses who have reinvented, adapted, and shown resiliency in the face of all challenges and barriers in 2020.
