Listen to the Hush of the Land

In Hush of the Land, Smoke Elser describes his lifetime of outfitting and guiding in the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Smoke is a gifted storyteller, and each chapter is a new adventure. Advocating for wilderness is Smoke’s passion and a common theme within each story he shares. Smoke’s characters include his wranglers and guides, his clientele, his family and many lifelong friends.

Smoke writes a colorful description of the places, wildlife and people, making you feel like you are riding the trails with him as he explores the rugged terrain of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Smoke points out the bright wildflowers, the stunning vistas, and soaring eagles. ”There is a moment on every trip when the guests truly arrive,” Smoke tells us. They slow down and take it all in, and their experience changes them.

Anyone who has a passion for recreating in the backcountry, horseback riding, fishing, or hunting will enjoy this book. Smoke and his family, crew and guests will keep you reading each story to its end and waiting to see what happens next in the backcountry of the Bob Marshall Wilderness.

Smoke has spent seven decades fighting to protect the land he loves, the land where he has made a living, the land that is his cathedral. In Hush of the Land Smoke shares his lifelong passion to teach people about a wild land ethic.

The author, Eva-Maria Maggi, wrote the book based on hundreds of hours of interviews. Eva traveled through Montana with Smoke, seeing the places and hearing the stories she later shaped into this book.

Smoke is a founding member of Back Country Horsemen, and Eva is the current president of Back Country Horsemen of Missoula that will celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2024. People interested in hosting a reading can send their request to info@evamaggi.com.

Phipps Park Trail Reroute

The North Florida Back Country Horsemen teamed up with the Southern Trailriders Association, an equestrian group in the Tallahassee, Florida area, to reclaim a mile and a half of trail at the Elinor Klapp Phipps Park, a 670 acre urban-fringe park flanked by two lakes. The park is owned by the Northwest Florida Water Management District and managed by the City of Tallahassee. The original multi-use trail was marked in the early 1990s by Southern Trailriders Association.

Over the years, portions of the original multi-use trail were repurposed for vehicle traffic and filled with gravel. It took a year and a half of planning and approvals, but we were able to make it happen. After the water management district thinned the pines in the area adjacent to the original trail, we were allowed to plan a route through pines, live oaks and dense vegetation for our trail reroute. This reroute is an equestrian-only trail section. With the help of the park manager we flagged, mulched, signed, filled holes, built fence barriers, and trimmed the new trail. On the last work day, December 8, 2023, we presented the NFBCH Equestrian Trail Champion Award for 2023 to Robert Steele, Park Management Specialist, City of Tallahassee.  .

NEMO Chapter of BCHMO

On September 23rd the NEMO Chapter of BCHMO had a joint workday with the Missouri Valley Chapter of Missouri Master Naturalist. Maintenance on the 5+ miles of Lick Creek trail, which is part of the Joanna trail at Mark Twain Lake was done by 8 volunteers, partnering together, clearing trees, cutting back undergrowth and removing trash and debris, allowing hikers, bicyclists and equestrians better access to the trail.

Packing a Katanaboy Saw on a Horse

By Dan Shier, Front Range Back Country Horsemen

Our Front Range Chapter clears trails in the two wilderness areas west of Denver. The usual mix is 20% pine, 20% aspen and 60% spruce, with about every fourth tree being green. For anything thicker than 8 inches we use a 3 ½ foot perforated lance tooth saw. This is usually rigged with an auxiliary handle on the end, so it effectively a two-person saw. Encased in its leather sheath, the saw is lies flat and is comfortable for both horse and rider. The rig is quite fast on the draw.

Lately we have been testing the Katanaboy 500 and 650 saws. These have been popular with our members for some of the smaller logs, especially of the log is hung up fairly high above the trail. The sheath that comes with the saw can be carried over the rider’s shoulder but that is not particularly comfortable and is liable to get hung up on low hanging branches. Anyway my horse is getting paid to carry our tools.

Is there anyone in another chapter that has found a good solution to carrying a Katanaboy on a horse?
