BCHD's Healthy Living Campus Project

BCHD has been working closely with the community since 2017 to reimagine its medical campus – home to our 66-year-old former hospital building located at 514 N. Prospect Ave. in Redondo Beach. Since May 2017, BCHD has held more than 60 meetings, drawing more than 1,000 comments from the public regarding ways to modernize the campus.

Guided by our vision of a healthy beach community, the campus brings to life programs, services and spaces that will serve the Beach Cities and its residents for decades to come, by:

Addressing seismic and life safety issues with the 514 Prospect former hospital building
Leveraging the campus to generate sufficient revenue to expand BCHD's free community health programs and address growing community health needs
Creating an intergenerational hub of well-being, using Blue Zones Project principles

BCHD Board Votes to Authorize Agreement with Sunrise Senior Living for Healthy Living Campus Redevelopment

The Beach Cities Health District Board of Directors voted Wednesday night to authorize the Chief Executive Officer to execute an Agreement to Enter into a Ground Lease with Sunrise Senior Living, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing redevelopment of BCHD’s former South Bay Hospital site as part of its Healthy Living Campus initiative.

The proposed agreement follows an extensive, multi-year planning and public engagement process focused on reimagining the former hospital building at 514 N. Prospect Avenue into a community-centered wellness destination that supports the entire community with healthy aging, intergenerational connection, and long-term financial sustainability for the health district.

“This project and the decision to move forward with Sunrise reflect years of community input, strategic planning, and evaluation,” said BCHD CEO Tom Bakaly. “The Healthy Living Campus vision is centered on supporting the health and wellness needs of our whole community while creating a sustainable future for BCHD and expanding services for older adults.”

The proposed development (see conceptual site plan below) would include a fully licensed Residential Care Facility for the Elderly (RCFE), offering independent living, assisted living, and specialized memory care as part of a broader continuum of care for older adults.

BCHD Board Makes Decision to Terminate Lease with Silverado Memory Care

At last night’s BCHD Board Meeting, the Board approved a motion to give notice of the early termination of its lease with Silverado Memory Care, a tenant on the BCHD campus. This was a difficult decision due to the impact it will have on Silverado residents, their families and staff.

In accordance with the terms of its existing lease, Silverado will be given one year’s notice to vacate its facility by May 29, 2027, and will not pay rent for that one-year period.

We are proud of our long-standing partnership with Silverado and will continue to work closely with them and their residents throughout the coming year.

BCHD is committed to supporting Silverado residents through a thoughtful, supported transition, with our Community Services team available to work with families needing assistance relocating to a new facility.

Center for Health & Fitness Construction Update:

Demolition has officially begun on the top floor of the 510 Prospect Avenue building. Crews are on-site removing interior structures to prepare for upcoming renovations. Additional updates will be shared as work progresses.

allcove Construction Update:

allcove Beach Cities marked a major milestone on May 16 with the groundbreaking of its future permanent home at 1272 Beryl Street in Redondo Beach. Crews have begun mobilizing construction equipment and trucks to prepare for grading next week. Construction is expected to continue through the spring of 2027.
