SOMA Students Helping to Prevent Opioid Overdoses

The BCOM Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) has joined forces with Dona Ana County Overdose Prevention Educator Athena Huckaby to distribute Narcan nasal spray throughout the community. Narcan, the brand name for the medication naloxone, is the antidote for an opioid overdose. With the exception of the methadone clinic, Huckaby says the SOMA students have distributed more Narcan than any other group in the community.

Students Help Screen Migrants in El Paso Shelters
BCOM medical students have been assisting with health screenings of migrants crossing the border in El Paso, Texas. The students say the eye-opening experience has not only allowed them to practice their clinical skills, but also given them insight into the current affairs of the world we live in today.
