In July 2018, BCOM's inaugural class will branch outside of the classroom to begin their third-year clerkships in one of the five clinical teaching hubs BCOM has established within the region.
Read on to meet a clinical preceptor from each hub and a medical student excited about giving back to a region where a personal connection exists.

The Albuquerque Hub also includes Espanola, Isleta, Las Vegas, Los Alamos, Santa Fe, and Santa Rosa. Students will have opportunities to explore healthcare in both the largest metropolitan area in New Mexico, as well as some the most rural and underserved areas in the state. Timothy Grenemyer, DO, said, "We have the premier heart hospital in the state here and a Level I Trauma Center. In my office specifically, they will be exposed to the wide range of patients we see in a general family practice, from newborns to elderly."

The Eastern New Mexico Hub covers the towns of Artesia, Carlsbad, Hobbs, Lovington, and Roswell. Students will gain an understanding of the unique challenges of practicing medicine a rural or remote setting. Bryan Cross, DO, said, "The students assigned to the Eastern NM hub will have opportunities for more direct involvement, one-on-one teaching, and hands-on experiences that students often lose out on when there is a hierarchy of multiple trainees at large academic centers."

The El Paso Hub also encompasses Isleta Del Sur Pueblo. Second generation El Paso physician Luis Urrea, MD, said, "Students working in El Paso will be exposed to a bi-cultural community and learn how to communicate in both English and Spanish. They’ll learn to understand the cultural differences that exist in our region so those won’t impede them in their ability to care for people. I hope to help teach students to not only become great doctors, but also to stay in this community that is in such need of physicians."

The Las Cruces Hub also includes Alamogordo, Deming, Hatch, Silver City, and Santa Teresa. Students working in this hub will not only have direct access to BCOM's teaching facilities, they will also gain experience working in a multi-cultural, mid-size city and the smaller, surrounding communities. Claudia Maidana-Paz, MD, said, "Students completing their clinical rotations in Las Cruces will be exposed to patients with a wide variety of clinical conditions and the unique socioeconomic circumstances of this region."

The Tucson Hub also includes the town of Marana, Arizona. Students working in this area will experience a unique patient demographic reflecting the wide range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds in the area. Tucson-based orthopaedic surgeon Rex Cooley, DO, said, "There are seven hospitals in Tucson and the students will see a large elderly patient demographic. There are also a lot of residency options that the students will be exposed to here in Arizona."
